City of Cheyenne  - State Capital Wyoming
The City of Cheyenne had its beginning in 1867, when the Union Pacific Railroad came through on its way to the west coast. The town site was first surveyed by General Grenville Dodge and was named for an Indian tribe that roamed the area (originally called 'Shey' an' nah', belonging to the tribe of Alogonquian, the largest family of Indians on the North American Continent). Settlement came so fast that the nickname "Magic City of the Plains" was adopted. Sure, the area is steeped in western history, and Buffalo Bill Cody once called the Sheridan Inn his home for a time in the 1890s. But according to True West Magazine [ 2006 ] this small northern Wyoming town takes first place honors because everything about it is authentically Western.

 Cheyenne Frontier Days, Cheyenne
It's the ultimate western celebration for fun-loving people of all ages. During the last full week of July, join us for an exciting 10 days of rodeo, concerts, western history and our famous blue jean western hospitality.

Cheyenne was founded on the banks of Crow Creek in July 1867. The town, named by Army General Grenville Dodge after the Indians who inhabited the area, took on many nicknames over the years. Cheyenne originally was referred to as "Hell on Wheels" because the first businesses to arrive at the new railhead were ones that traveled along with the Union Pacific as it broke ground westward across the Great Plains. These businesses were set up in tents with false store fronts. Most were drinking and gambling establishments that catered to the rough and tumble life of transient cowboys, local ranch hands, and the soldiers at nearby Fort D.A. Russell.
