The Biker's Guide to Texas: 25 Great Motorcycle Rides in the Lone Star State
by Dorothy Waldman (Author) Product Description : This is the book Texas bikers have been waiting for. Theres plenty about what to see
and do along the way, but the focus is on the rides: Where to go, what signs to look for, how far the next
turnoff is, when to be especially alert for whats around a sharp bend, when you can expect to relax a bit and
just cruise. These 25 great rides have been scouted by Dorothy Waldman, who became a Biker Babe in her
fifties when she finally mustered the courage to get on a motorcycle. She quickly discovered the thrills of
riding the back roads of the Lone Star state, from the North Texas woodlands and lakesbliss on a biketo the
pastoral Gulf Coast to the tricky ride in Big Bend country along the Rio GrandeThe most desolate, the most
adventurous, and the most memorable sixty-seven miles of pure riding ecstasy or pure terror, a ride to be
attempted, she warns, only after youve fully mastered your bike. Such pithy appraisals pepper the directions
and route descriptions in The Bikers Guide to Texas. All rides are carefully mapped. They come with hints on what to see, where to eat and where to stay.

South Texas Tourism
No matter what your interests are, there is something for you here in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Much of
the South Texas area's attraction lies in its geography, its climate, its natural beauty, its history and its rich Hispanic flavor.
Situated as far to the south as Miami, the laid-back subtropical setting easily lends itself to a slower, more
relaxed, somehow more pleasant life-style. The musical sounds of the Spanish language you'll hear on the streets and in the
shops simply confirm that you're "not in Kansas anymore," but in a unique, very special place. Fields of
vegetables, sugar cane and onions that grow here year round freely invade the county lines. Summer's cotton and winter's grapefruit and oranges can be found across the street from handsome residential
neighborhoods just as easily as farther out in the county.

Dallas - Prairies and Lakes - Capital City Texas
At the site of this present metropolis the first anglo-American settler built a single cabin in 1841. Two years
later the "town" consisted of two log cabins. By the mid-1870s, Dallas had become a thriving business town
and market center with a cosmopolitan, urbane air unmatched anywhere on the frontier at the time. This was
primarily due to several immigrations of skilled and cultured groups of French, German, Swiss, English, and other Europeans. See also Dallas / Fort Worth Area

the Republic of Texas. Location on north bank of Colorado River was chosen where rich blacklands meet
scenic hills. Site occupied at the time by a four-family settlement called Waterloo. Name honors Stephen F.
Austin, the "Father of Texas." In early Sept. 1839, archives and furniture of Texas government were transported from Houston to Austin by 50 ox-drawn wagons.

Corpus Christi - Gulf Coast
City is major deep-water port and one of Texas' most popular seacoast playground cities. First European to
have visited area is believed to have been Spanish explorer Alonzo de Piñeda in 1519. First settlement began
as frontier trading post founded 1839 by impresario-colonizer Col. Henry Lawrence Kinney; obscure
settlement until about 1845 when accelerated growth began. Institutions of higher learning are Del Mar College
and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Seawall, with steps to the water, was built in the late 1930s as part of a
major landfill that created Shoreline Boulevard and the popular "T" head docks for pleasure boats. Corpus
Christi Beach, north of downtown over the bridge, is the site of the USS Lexington and Texas State Aquarium, and offers park areas, picnic tables, showers, and rest rooms.
El Paso - Big Bend Region
Grew from earlier settlements dating back to the Juan de Oñate expedition in 1598 and a settlement by Juan
Maria Ponce de León 1827, although area missions predate that civil settlement by almost 150 years. Largest
U.S. city on Mexican border; neighboring Juárez, is Mexico's largest border city. Combined populations are
about two million. Located in ancient mountain pass from which the name derived; surrounded by mile-high peaks.
Fredericksburg - Hill Country
Settled by immigrant families from Germany in 1846, led by John O. Meusebach. Although settlement was on
Comanche frontier, Meusebach-Comanche Treaty of following year established lasting peace. Many older
buildings retain traditional German styles; several units comprise National Historic District. German is still
spoken occasionally, and old customs are regularly observed: Easter Fires, Schuetzenfests (marksmanship
tournaments), Oktoberfest, Weinhnachten, and Kinderfest. Visitors attracted by scenic beauty, European
atmosphere, historic landmarks, excellent fall and winter hunting, and famous bread and pastries. Birthplace of Fleet Adm. Chester W. Nimitz, Commander in Chief of the Pacific Fleet during World War II.
Fredericksburg is an outstanding spot for sportsmen to find year-round opportunities to hunt native and exotic
species of animals. Fall hunting leases are available on many ranches throughout the area, and the Fredericksburg
Galveston - Gulf Coast
When first explored by Europeans, the island was an Akokisa Indian site. The Karankawa Indians used the
island for hunting and fishing. Pirate Jean Laffite established a settlement in 1817. During the Texas Revolution
the harbor served as the port for the Texas navy. Following the war, a group of investors obtained
ownership of land at the harbor to found a town in 1838, and the following year the Texas legislature granted
incorporation to the city of Galveston. Early years gave city many firsts in Texas: first Roman Catholic
convent, first electric lights, and first medical college. Disastrous Galveston storm of 1900, the entire island
was inundated during a hurricane, which claimed more than 6,000 lives. A seawall was built two years later, presently 10 miles long, it has proved its staying power several times over.
Galveston Island offers 32 miles of beach and also is a treasure trove of things historically Texan. Details available at the Galveston Island Visitors Centers.
Many city parks, picnic areas and recreation centers offer playground equipment, athletic fields, tennis courts, and golf courses.

Houston Space City USA - Gulf Coast
Named after Sam Houston, general of Texas army that won independence from Mexico, and president of Republic of Texas. The city, largest in Texas and fourth largest in nation, has experienced phenomenal
growth since a small riverboat landing was established on Buffalo Bayou by Allen brothers in August 1836.
Today, SpaceCity USA is an industrial and financial hub for much of the state. It is one of nation's largest seaports, and has meeting space, hotel space, dining space and sports space.
San Antonio - South Texas Plains
In 1718, at an Indian village at the southern edge of the Texas Hill Country, Spain established Mission San
Antonio de Valero (later called the Alamo). A customary accompanying presidio (fort), San Antonio de Bexar
(Bay-her), protected mission endeavors. Today's city and county names derive from those 18th-century Spanish beginnings that predate founding of the United States by more than half a century.

Legends of Texas Barbecue Cookbook: Recipes and Recollections from the Pit Bosses
by Robb Walsh (Author) From Publishers Weekly : Not every cookbook would include a recipe that begins, Dig a pit 3-feet-deep, 4-feet
-wide, and 40-feet-long. But this is Texas and, given 300 pounds of brisket, there is no more invigorating an
experience than this kind of open pit barbecuing as championed by Walsh in his collection of barbecue
memoirs, trivia and history. A newspaperman at heart, Walsh interviews the top pit bosses across the state
and shares their secrets: Harley Goerlitz instructs beginners on a simple Pork Shoulder while Bubba Hodges
offers Egypt Brisket with a mop sauce of vinegar, ranch dressing and Lone Star beer. For the politically
astute, there are Barbecue Sauce offerings from both Lady Bird Johnson and Barbara Bush, not to mention
Senator Lloyd Bentsen Highway Rice Salad, a democratic blend of Texmati rice, chopped vegetables, yogurt,
pecans and cilantro. Most interesting is the exploration of cultural influences across the prairie, including a
surprising look at the German and Czech political radicals who landed in Texas in the mid-1800s, and the
smoked meats they brought with them. For those who prefer motoring to grilling, Walsh includes a fine list of
barbecue joints all along the Barbecue Belt, as well as different meat markets and a calendar of some of the
major cook-offs held throughout the state [ Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc. ].
