Albany is the jewel in New York's crown. The City, first settled by the Dutch in 1624, was given its charter in
1686 by Governor Thomas Dongan and became Capital of the State of New York in 1797.
Albany has close ties with the cities of Troy, New York and Schenectady, New York, forming what is
generally known as the Capital District.
Albany was one of the earlier permanent settlements in the thirteen original American colonies and is the
second oldest chartered city in the United States. Modern-day Albany is built on the site of the Dutch Fort Orange and its surrounding community of Beverwyck.
Binghamton - City of Binghamton
The City of Binghamton is nestled in the Southern Tier of New York, at the confluence of the Susquehanna and Chenango Rivers.
Buffalo - City of Buffalo - Buffalo is the state's second-largest city, after New York City
Buffalo lies on the Niagara River, which connects Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. European-Americans first
settled there in the late-18th century. Growth was slow until the city became the western terminus of the Erie
Canal some 40 years later. By the turn of the next century, Buffalo was one of the country's leading cities,
and by far its largest inland port. The huge grain elevators and industrial plants that the canal spawned began
to disappear in the mid-20th century as the Saint Lawrence Seaway enabled water traffic to bypass the city.

Kingston - City of Kingston
The City of Kingston was first called Esopus after a local Indian tribe, and later renamed Wiltwyck (Dutch: wild
area). It was one of the three large settlements in New Netherland. After the Dutch colony was taken over by the British in 1664, the settlement was renamed Kingston.
In 1777 Kingston became the first capital of New York. Shortly after the Battle of Saratoga, the city was burned by British troops moving to Canada from New York City

Newburgh - City of Newburgh
The City of Newburgh is along the Hudson River, between the Town of Newburgh and the Town of New Windsor.
The first settlement was made in 1709 by German Lutherans from the Rhenish Palatinate, who named it the Palatine Parish by Quassic. By 1750, most of the Germans had been replaced by people of English and
Scottish descent, who in 1752 changed the name to the Parish of Newburgh.

By the end of the 19th Century, the city was a heavy industrial area, due in no small part to the huge power
potential offered by the swiftly-flowing Niagara River. The city still has a strong industrial base, but its location is away from the tourist areas.

Plattsburgh is a small U.S. city located on the western shore of Lake Champlain in the northeastern part of the
state of New York. Plattsburgh was founded by Zephaniah Platt in 1785 after he was granted the land for it by George Clinton. The Saranac River flows through the city into Lake Champlain.
Rochester - City of Rochester
Rochester, also known as both The Flour City and The Flower City, is a city in Monroe County. The City is at
the center of a larger Metropolitan Area which encompasses and extends past Monroe County and includes Genesee County, Livingston County, Ontario County, Orleans County, and Wayne County.
Rome - City of Rome - in the south-central part of the Oneida County
Native Americans called the area Deo-Wain-Sta, or The Great Carrying Place, referring to the portage between the Mohawk River and Wood Creek. The portage was also known as the Oneida Carrying Place.
Boats coming up the Mohawk River had to transfer their cargo (and boats) 1.7 miles overland to continue
west to Lake Ontario. This important east/west trade route was later formalized by construction of the Erie Canal.
The Rome Sand Plains is a 15,000-acre inland pine barrens within the city, that consists of a mosaic of high
sand dunes and low peat bogs, mixed northern hardwood forests, meadows and wetlands. It is one of only a handful of inland pine barrens remaining in the United States.

The area that is now Schenectady was originally the land of the Mohawk tribe of the Iroquois Nation. When
Dutch settlers arrived in the Hudson Valley in the middle of the 17th century, the Mohawk called the settlement
at Fort Orange "Schau-naugh-ta-da", meaning "over the pine plains." Eventually, this word entered the lexicon
of the Dutch settlers, but the meaning was reversed, and the name referred to the bend in the Mohawk River where the city lies today.
Syracuse - City of Syracuse
Syracuse is the county seat of Onondaga County and the economical and educational hub of Central New York, a region with over a million inhabitants.
The city has functioned as a major crossroads over the last two centuries, first between the Erie Canal and its branch canals, then of the railway network.

The City of Troy is located on the western edge of the county. Troy is home to Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute, the Emma Willard School, and is the hometown of Uncle Sam.

Erie Canal
The Erie Canal is famous in song and story. Proposed in 1808 and completed in 1825, the canal links the
waters of Lake Erie in the west to the Hudson River in the east. An engineering marvel when it was built, some called it the Eighth Wonder of the World.
In order to open the country west of the Appalachian Mountains to settlers and to offer a cheap and safe
way to carry produce to a market, the construction of a canal was proposed as early as 1768. See also Wikipedia.

The Holland Society was founded in New York City in 1885 to collect information respecting the settlement
and history of New Netherland. Its main objective is to find and preserve documentation about the inhabitants'
lives and times so as to elucidate the political, social, and religious patterns in the Dutch colony.
New Netherland Museum - The New Netherland Museum and the Half Moon
The museum operates the Half Moon, a reproduction of the ship that Henry Hudson sailed from Holland to the

Rensselaer County Historical Society
