The Mountain Crows valued the area that came to be known as the Clark's Fork Bottom as a traditional hunting and gathering site because of its abundant game, good water and wild fruit; the trees at the base of the Rimrocks were sacred as a burial site. The recorded history of Billings begins in 1877, when a trading post and stage station called Coulson, after the local steamship manager, were established near what is now known as Alkali Creek. In 1882, the area was surveyed by the Northern Pacific Railroad and renamed after Frederick Billings, a former president of the Northern Pacific.

Located in the rolling plains of north central Montana, Havre began over 100 years ago as the first trains forged across the Great Plains. After the Custer Massacre in 1876, the US Military created forts in eastern Montana including one where the north-flowing Tongue river flowed into the east-flowing Yellowstone river. Fort Keogh (named after one of the massacre victims) started as a few rough winter cabins, but grew into a moderate sized western fort, from which its commander, Nelson Miles, effectively brought the remaining "uncontrolled" native Americans into subjugation during the last decade of the 1800s.

Three Forks is easily accessible off I-90 (exit 278), US-287, and Montana Highway 2, and lies enroute between Yellowstone National Park and Glacier National Park. The area at the headwaters of the Missouri River and surrounding the town of Three Forks has some of the most colorful legends and early-day history of any place in Montana.

The very much alive ghost town, Virginia City, Montana, is frozen in time. It is a remarkably well preserved old west Victorian gold mining town just 20 miles west of Yellowstone National Park (90 miles by road). So it froze, and now represents the whole Victorian era. It is the true and original Old West. It is a gem, held within an incredibly rich area of natural beauty, recreation and history.

 Western Heritage Center 
The Western Heritage Center cares for a collection of over 16,000 artifacts, including over 1,000 photographs that document the social history, architecture, public events and the development of the Yellowstone River Valley. Recent oral history projects have focused on interviews with elderly Yellowstone River Valley residents about farming and ranching activities, Crow and Northern Cheyenne women and Deaconess Billings Clinic personnel. This research will be used for future exhibits and publications. Scholars and students of history from throughout the United States have researched our archives and collection.
