The region is as rich in history as it is in natural splendor. The long standing presence and influence of the
Penobscot tribes endures to this day. Early European settlers arrived in the mid-1700s, and by the late 1800s

The many rivers, lakes, and streams afford a myriad of activities, including fishing, canoeing, and whitewater
rafting. The mountains are always a hiker's paradise and the winter trails are a haven for cross country

Washington
York - York County
York County is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, county in America. It was established in 1636. The first
shiretown (county seat) was in York. For a time, both York and Alfred served as one-half shiretowns until
Alfred became the full shiretown about 1830. In New England, county government is weaker than in the rest
of the country since, historically, the towns developed earlier and since the towns in Maine now have a measure of "home rule" whereas the counties do not.

Bath has sailed into the present bringing a taste of her history with her and is now home of the world-class
shipbuilder Bath Iron Works. At the south end of the city the nationally acclaimed Maine Maritime Museum is often visited by Tall Ships. Downtown Bath has a unique mix of shops, restaurants and services.
Belfast - Belfast Area Chamber of Commerce
The local flavor of the area can be seen as you walk the docks and watch lobstermen hauling their traps or
drive along the countryside to see farmers planting their crops or tilling the soil. Mom-and-pop businesses

Near Presque Isle and Houlton, Maine. Day and night skiing. Vertical drop is 984 feet. There are 19 trails.
Big Squaw Mountain Resort
Located in the beautiful Moosehead Lake Region, home to Moosehead Lake, which is forty miles long and 20 miles wide at its widest point. Truly the edge of the wilderness of the Great North Woods.
Big Squaw Mountain Resort has one of the most spectacular views in the world. Sights include Mount Kineo
who's sheer 800 foot cliffs plunge into Moosehead Lake , Spencer Mountains, and of course Mount Katahdin which is Maine's highest point and the end of the Appalachian Trail.
Black Mountain
Located in the Longfellow Mountains of Western Maine, Black Mountain has operated for over four decades,
offering affordable downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, and snowboarding to folks in the area. It has also
been the site of a number of world and national cross country skiing championships over the years.
