Florida Keys
The "Keys", an archipelago in southern Florida, was made famous by Ernest Hemingway who wrote about
its beauty and Caribbean lifestyle. The "Overseas Highway" links drivers from the continent to Key West by
an amazing 180 km long road over crystal clear waters part of the way. Key West is also the most southerly
point of the United States and the largest resort of the Keys. There are many places worth visiting here: the
coral reef near Key Largo (in the John Pennekemp State Park), Windley Key with the "Theatre of the Sea", the
city of Marathon, known for sports fishing, and Bahia Honda State Park offering a magnificent white sandy beach, fantastic for swimming and diving.
Northwest Florida - Destin, Panama City, Pensacola
North Central Florida - Gainesville, Tallahassee, Williston
Northeast Florida - Jacksonville
Daytona Beach is situated north east of Florida on the Atlantic coast, and is a popular destination especially
with students. This resort boasts a vast white sandy beach that can also be driven on. Highway A1A is a
popular route to follow as it offers beautiful scenery along the Atlantic coast. On the way from Daytona
Beach to the north, you will pass St Augustine, the oldest city in North America, founded in 1565 by Spanish
conquerors, and today one of the biggest attractions in Florida. At the end of this highway is Amelia Island, offering miles of long sandy beaches and green forests.
Central East - Daytona Beach, Melbourne, Orlando/Sanford, Fort Pierce], Vero Beach
Central Florida - Orlando
Central Florida is the area around Orlando, famous for Walt Disney World, EPCOT Centre, MGM Studios,
Universal Studios and Sea World. They are all within easy reach of the city of Orlando. In Orlando, you can
find the famous restored "Church Street Station", once a railway station that has been trans-formed into an attractive fun park and lively shopping centre today.
Central West - Tampa, Clearwater
Tampa Bay is the economic centre of western Florida. The city of Tampa has an international airport with
direct flights to and from Europe. It is an ideal starting point to visit the resorts of the Pinellas Suncoast on the
Gulf of Mexico, including St Pete Beach, Treasure Island and Clearwater Beach, all with uncrowded long
sandy beaches. Visit Tampa's lively "latino" quarter, Ybor City. Also at Tampa Bay is the city of St Petersburg,
known for having lots of sunshine and greenery. Here, you can count the number of days in a year when the sun doesn't shine, on one hand.
Southwest - Punta Gorda, Naples, Sarasota, Fort Myers, Venice
Naples is a pleasant resort with many similarities to other Caribbean towns. In inland Naples, on the way from
Miami, lie the Everglades which you can visit from the Everglades Parkway. This road is also called "Alligator
Alley" because the most popular "inhabitants" in the Everglades are alligators. The Everglades are a unique
reserve. Situated opposite Fort Meyers are the side by side islands of Sanibel and Captiva, offering magnificent sandy beaches where you can find beautiful seashells and fauna. The islands have preserved
their original character due to strict laws concerning new construction. Opposite the coast and Naples is
Marco Island, a holiday island resort with top quality facilities, immense beaches, excellent restaurants and the list goes on. It's also an ideal base to discover the Ten Thousand Islands.
Southeast - Fort Lauderdale, Key West, Marathon, Miami, Palm Beach, Stuart South east Florida owes its popularity to Miami and to resorts such as Miami Beach, Palm Beach, Fort
Lauderdale and Boca Raton, which are highly rated holiday destinations known worldwide. In Miami Beach,
there is the marvellous "Art Deco" district with beautifully restored houses from the thirties. Palm Beach is
situated approximately 120 km north of Miami Beach, the place where the "rich and beautiful" hang out between Christmas and Easter. Approximately half way between Palm Beach and Miami is Fort Lauderdale,
otherwise known as the "Venice of America".
Emerald Coast, First Coast, Florida Panhandle, Gold Coast, Nature Coast, South Florida, Space Coast, Sun
Coast, Tampa Bay Area, Treasure Coast, Walt Disney World.
Cape Coral, Clearwater, Coral Springs, Fort Lauderdale, Gainesville, Hialeah, Hollywood, Jacksonville,
Lakeland, Miami, Miami Gardens, Miramar, North Miami, Orlando, Pembroke Pines, Plantation, Pompano Beach, Port St. Lucie, St. Petersburg, Sunrise, Tampa, West Palm Beach.

Cuisine / Floribbean Cuisine
Visitors have a huge choice of all types of restaurants, especially in the main resorts, including Greek, Italian,
Spanish, local and traditional specialities, from fast food to gourmet standard. Of course, there are also the
wellknown chains like "Denny's" and "McDonald's". The speciality of Florida is "Key Lime Pie", which you must try.
Cuisines of the world - Article by By Errol Croft
Before you eat many meals in Florida, you're going to run into the term Floribbean cuisine. No one seems to
have a definitive explanation of what Floribbean is, except that it was first used in south Florida, notably
Miami, where the chefs were preparing a lighter version of Caribbean favorites. Known as the "mango gang"
, these chefs were frying less and going lighter on oils. Obviously, the term is a combined form of the words
Florida and Caribbean, so diners can expect to find lots of Florida's seafood selections, fresh fruits and local
vegetables prepared with the islands' traditional tropical ingredients like mangos and papayas, coconut milk, plantains, yams, okra, squashes, chilies and legumes .........
