Most of the region is comprised of forested hills and rocky peaks, with farmland and small towns interspersed in the valleys and plains. This region is also the focal point for the state's small vineyard and wine industry, as well as a key component of the tourist economy of the state. Many visitors arrive in the autumn to witness the fall foliage, and to visit the region's many covered bridges or waterfalls.
 Lower Connecticut River Valley - located in the southeastern-central part of the state
The region is known for its picturesque riverside scenery, small river and shoreline towns, and tourist attractions such as the Goodspeed Opera House, the Essex Steam Train, and Gillette Castle.
 Naugatuck River Valley
Located in the central-southwest of the state, and is focused around the southern reaches of the Naugatuck and Housatonic Rivers. The Naugatuck River Valley is comprised of the towns of Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Derby, Naugatuck, Oxford, Seymour and Shelton.
 New York metropolitan area / Gold Coast
The metropolitan area includes New York City, Long Island, northern New Jersey, six counties north of New York City in New York State, southwestern Connecticut, and a small part of northeastern Pennsylvania.
The Gold Coast, as befits its name, is known for having some of the wealthiest towns and neighborhoods in the country. These towns include Greenwich, Stamford, Darien, New Canaan, Ridgefield, Wilton, Westport, Weston and Fairfield.

Located in the northeastern corner of the state. It is generally associated with Windham County, but also incorporates eastern sections of Tolland County and the northern portion of New London County.

The terrain is mostly flat near both the coast and the Housatonic River, rising significantly only in the north of the county. The highest elevation is close to the northernmost point in the county, found at two areas of approximately 1,050 feet (320 m) above sea level in the town of Wolcott.
New Haven county serves as a center of advanced learning, with several noted educational institutions located within its borders centered on the city of New Haven. These include: Albertus Magnus College, Gateway Community College, Quinnipiac University, Southern Connecticut State University, University of New Haven and Yale University.
