Christmas Markets in Austria

The weeks before Christmas are a very special time of year indeed. Vienna holds many Christmas markets throughout the city, however, the best known is probably the colourful market held in front of the town hall. In the Spittelberg district you will find the arts and crafts market, on 'Freyung' there is the Old Vienna Market and there is even a market in front of Schönbrunn Palace. Inhale the aroma of mulled wine, grilled sausages, roasted chestnuts and caramelised sugared almonds, as you wonder around the festively decorated wooden stalls, selling traditional, handmade wooden wares.

For children there is the Wiener Christkindlemarkt. As part of an old tradition they can wrap and make presents in the 'Volkshalle' of the city hall or to bake something in an oven.

As winter comes to Vienna and the Christmas season approaches, it will be time for the Schönbrunn Christmas Market to open its door, this year for the tenth time. For the five weeks before Christmas, the twinkling lights of the Christmas tree standing in front of the illuminated palace will create a romantic seasonal mood. More than 55 exhibitors will be presenting Austrian handicrafts and original gifts such as hand-made Christmas decorations, mangers or objects made of natural materials will be available for visitors to admire and make purchases from. The fragrance of fresh Christmas cakes and biscuits and hot punch will also contribute to the atmosphere and feeling of Christmas.
The Christmas tree is again donated by Österreichische Bundesforste AG and comes from Mariazellerland, Styria.
