Tango in Montivideo -  Homepage Ulrike + Eckart Haerter
Tango in Montevideo differs a good deal from Tango in Buenos Aires. What you'll notice very soon in Montevideo is the almost complete absence of show tango. If Buenos Aires is the 3 Star Restaurant of the tango with all the pomp and circumstances that belong to an establishment like that, Montevideo is the restaurant of affectionately made regional cooking that you'll like for a lifetime. Here tango is an element of life, so natural and unobtrusive that nobody gets the idea it could need a refinement ......

Cuisine - Uruguayan Cooking

Uruguay reflects European traditions in some of its cuisine, as well as influences from neighboring countries. Meat is a staple at meals and parilladas are common. Local sausages are very tasty.

Red Uruguay - Recipes / Recetas
'En esta sección pretendemos dar un vistazo a la cocina uruguaya en general. No seremos muy estrictos en lo que se refiere a las recetas realmente autóctonas de la cocina nacional. Aunque estas receta si podrán encontrarse aquí, nos referiremos en un sentido mucho más amplio a la cocina que conforma la dieta diaria de los uruguayos. Esperamos que nuestros compatriotas en las más lejanas tierras y aún los extranjeros puedan disfrutar de esta sección de recetas'.

History of Uruguay

Independent from Brasil: 25 August 1828.

The only inhabitants of Uruguay before European colonization of the area were the Charrua Indians, a small tribe driven south by the Guarani Indians of Paraguay.
The Spanish discovered the territory of present-day Uruguay in 1516, but the Indians' fierce resistance to conquest, combined with the absence of gold and silver, limited settlement in the region during the 16th and 17th centuries.

The Far Horizons: Thirty Years Among The Gauchos Of Uruguay
Christopher Empson, Renee Scott (Editor)
The setting of this memoir Empson is rural life in the beginning of the century, which was undergoing immense changes as a result of the modernization that was reaching the River Plate countryside. Modernization brought drastic changes in the life of the gauchos, who "were accustomed to hunting calves freely under the open sky of the unfenced pampa, to eating the best meat and discarding the rest for the sole obligation of delivering the hide to the owner. Things changed" The life of the gauchos in Argentina and Uruguay inspired a considerable number of authors whose work is grouped in what is known as Literatura Gauchesca. Empson writes of life in rural Uruguay and tells of his own experiences. Like many texts written by Spanish conquistadors more than five centuries ago, Empson's memoir is about the encounter between a European and the American land. In this encounter, the newcomer is seduced by what he sees and in his golden years feels the necessity to register his experiences....

The Teatro Solis: 150 Years of Opera, Concert and Ballet in Montevideo
E.Thomas Glasow (Foreword), Susana Salgado, Julio Maria Sanguinetti (Preface)
The Teatro Solis in Montevideo, Uruguay - established in 1856 and still operating - is the oldest theatre in the Americas. Solis audiences thrilled to the lyricism of many of the great singers of the 19th century, among them Adelina Patti, Romilda Pantaleoni, Gemma Bellincioni and Enrico Caruso, accompanied by a 285-member company. Programmes also featured orchestra and dance: the theatre played host to dancer Vaslav Nijinsky's last stage performance and presented Puccini, Mascagni, Saint-Saens and Richard Strauss. Susana Salgado's historical account features anecdotes, reviews and illustrations. There is a complete narrative chronology of performances, indexed by performer and work.
