Patagonia has thousands of miles of diverse and dramatic landscapes and micro-environments, sparsely populated by humans and rich in wildlife and natural wonders.  Santiago - Capital City of Chile and colonial center
Cultural and economic center of the nation. Santiago occupies a spectacular intermontane basin at the foot of the highest peaks in the Andes. It features excellent restaurants and hotels, cultural events and shopping. Nearby ski areas, national parks, colonial haciendas and wineries all make it easy fir day trips from Santiago.

 Altacama & Altiplano
Speckled with lakes, marshes, salt flats, and geysers, crowned by 20,000 foot volcanoes, the Altiplano is Chile's link with the great civilizations of the Central Andes. Today, a traditional society of Aymara Indians wanders the Altiplano with their domesticated llamas and alpacas, congregating periodically for festivals in eerily whitewashed 'ceremonial villages'. A system of spectacular national parks -- including Lauca National Park, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve -- protects vast expanses of this singular landscape.
 Antarctic
The Antarctic Peninsula, which stretches north like a finger towards Cape Horn, is the northernmost and consequently warmest portion of the continent. Nine countries have research stations on the Antarctic Peninsula and its outlying islands.
 Central Valley
All of Chile's largest cities are located here, as are most of its universities and industries, its vineyards, finest agricultural lands, colonial and early republican architecture. In fact, central Chile is something of a microcosm of the country, balanced between deserts to the north and forests to the south, with the capital poised between the highest peaks in the Americas and a host of premier beach resorts.
 Easter Island
This is the world's most isolated bit of land, a tiny pinprick in the great pacific, a mound of consolidated lava and ash from three submarine volcanoes. The natives call their island Rapa Nui or Te Pito o Te Henua, 'the navel of the earth.'
 Lake District
Chile's southern region of lakes and volcanoes is an expression of nature's inimitable aesthetic and startling exuberance. Between volcanic cataclysms, glacial sculpting, torrential rivers and massive temperate rainforests, this is very much a landscape in flux, modeling and remodeling itself before our eyes.
This area is home to one of the most remarkable indigenous cultures in the Americas, the Mapuches. For nearly three centuries, the Mapuches defended their homeland, La Araucania, from the Spanish conquistadors. Three centuries: such vigor! But that is the nature of the lake region.
 Northern Desert
 Patagonia
The first Europeans to lay eyes on this landscape were led by Ferdinand Magellan, who pioneered passage through the treacherous strait that now bears his name. His expedition named the mainland 'Tierra de los Patagones,' unwittingly spawning the myth of a race of Patagonian giants. To the south, they saw the horizon darkened by smoke from the natives' fires, and named the great island Tierra del Fuego. The legend of Patagonia was set in motion.
Robinson Crusoe Island - Archipelago Juan Fernandez
This tiny group of islands, located some four hundred miles off the Chilean coast, includes what is probably literature's most famous 'deserted' island. Isla Robinson Crusoe is the very island on which the Scottish mariner Alexander Selkirk was marooned for over four years: his recollections of the ordeal gave rise to Daniel Defoe's famous novel and the island dreams which so many share.

"In the beginning of time, God created the wonders of the world. When he was finished, however, he saw that he had many leftover pieces. He had parts of rivers and valleys, of oceans and lakes, of glaciers and deserts, of mountains and forests, and of meadows and hills. Rather than to let such beauty go to waste, God put them all together and cast them to the most remote corner of the earth. This is how Chile was born."
