Rough Guide to World Music Volume One: Africa, Europe & The Middle East
Simon Broughton, Mark Ellingham, Richard Trillo (Editor) The septuagenarian Cheikha Rimitti is the godmother of rai, a no-holds barred singer with a voice like
sandpaper, a larger-than-life personality and a gift for raunchy lyrics. With the success of younger rai superstars such as Khaled has come renewed recognition for Rimitti, and this latest album combines
traditional instrumentation with the modern rai pop sound of synths and drum machines. She is assisted by
the production of Mohammed Maghni and Bellemou Messaoud - two key figures in modern rai - who help make
tracks such as "Nakhla", "Mani Man" and the seductive "Saida" truly irresistible. After almost half a century,
Rimitti?s powers show no signs of waning and Nouar includes some of her best work ever. Paperback 784 pages (November 25, 1999); Publisher: Rough Guides; Language: English; ISBN:

World Music: A Very Short Introduction - Philip V. Bohlman
'World music' emerged as an invention of the West from encounters with other cultures. This book draws
readers into a remarkable range of these historical encounters, in which music had the power to evoke the
exotic and to give voice to the voiceless. In the course of the volume's eight chapters the reader witnesses
music's involvement in the modern world, but also the individual moments and particular histories that are
crucial to an understanding of music's diversity. World Music is wide-ranging in its geographical scope, yet
individual chapters provide in-depth treatments of selected music cultures and regional music histories. The
book frequently zooms in on repertoires and musicians - such as Bob Marley, Bartok, and Nusrat Fateh Ali
Khan - and attempts to account for world music's growing presence and popularity at the beginning of the twenty-first century.
