Trekking in Turkey - The Official Site for Lycian Way and St Paul Trail
Turkey has two long distance trekking routes: The Lycian Way and The St Paul Trail. Both trails are about 500km long.
Kate Clow with Terry Richardson researched designed and implemented both trails. Many other volunteers, including Atil Ulas Cuce and Kerem Karaerkek, who own Middle Earth Travel, helped. Kate and Terry
produced the guide books and maps to the two trails, assisted by George Zsiga, who drew the map of the St
Paul Trail, and Ueli Aellig, who took GPS readings on the St Paul Trail and part of the Lycian Way.
Both trails are 'way-marked' with red-white paint flashes every 100m or less. Both are described in the guide
books and maps. Before you walk, you can get up to date information on the 'update' pages of this web site.

When Great Britain declared war on Germany on 4 August 1914 there was never any doubt which way
Australia would go. As a dominion she was automatically and legally committed; but in any case Australian sentiment was overwhelmingly pro-British, and Andrew Fisher spoke for the whole country when he
promised to support her 'to our last man and our last shilling."

important is the simplicity and humility in our approach of a trip, and also the ambition in the choices of our itineraries which are sewn by our hands.
Traveling with Terra Anatolia is therefore to come back to values more simple, stronger and pure, at the same
time, to travel the human ladder, only to target and become again in contact with other men and nature. Then if these values are also yours, you will be welcomed in the land of ĞMother Anatoliağ…

Osman's Dream: The Story of the Ottoman Empire 1300-1923
- by Caroline Finkel The dynamic saga of the Ottoman Empire from its visionary inception to its final destruction on the battlefields
of the First World War The Ottoman chronicles recount that the first sultan, Osman, dreamt of the dynasty he
would found - a tree, fully-formed, emerged from his navel, symbolising the vigour of his successors and the
extent of their domains. This is the first book to bring the full story of the Ottoman dynasty - and its empire and
peoples - to a broader readership. Osman's descendants combined the resourcefulness of their nomadic
origins with the imperial world-view of conquered Byzantium. The result was a multi-ethnic state that for six
centuries held sway over territories stretching - at their greatest - from Hungary to the Persian Gulf, and from
North Africa to the Caucasus. The Ottoman path to modernity was every bit as complex as those of the
Habsburgs or Romanovs. Understanding the realization of Osman's vision over the many centuries when the
Ottoman Empire controlled the centre of the globe is essential for anyone who seeks to understand the modern world. Hardcover 512 pages (July 4, 2005); Publisher: John Murray

Ataturk: The Rebirth of a Nation
- by Patrick Kinross With the collapse of the Ottoman Empire after the First World War came the emergence of new nations, chief
among them Turkey itself. It was the creation of one man, the soldier-statesman Mustafa Kemal, who dragged
his country from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century, and in defeating Western imperialists inspired 'the
cause of the East'. Lord Kinross writes of the intrigues of empires, the brutalities of civil war, personal
courage - showing us Ataturk, the incarnation of glory - as well as of Kemal's youthful ambition, and his problems with his wife.
Paperback 560 pages (November 15, 2001); Publisher: Weidenfeld & Nicholson history
The Turks Today: After Ataturk
- b y Andrew Mango Eighty years have passed since Mustafa Kemal Ataturk founded the Turkish Republic out of the ruins of the
Ottoman Empire and set it on the path of modernisation. He was determined that his country should be
accepted as a member of the family of civilised nations. Today Turkey is a rapidly developing country, an
emergent market, a medium-sized regional power with the second strongest army in NATO. It is an open
country which attracts millions of tourists, thousands of foreign businessmen and hundreds of researchers.
They enjoy Turkish hospitality, experience its rich landscape and history, but find it hard to form an overall
picture of the country. In this effective sequel to Ataturk, Andrew Mango provides such an overall portrait,
tracing the republic's development since the death of its founder and bringing to life the Turkish people and
their vibrant society today. The Turks Today also interprets the latest academic research for a broader audience. Hardcover 288 pages (August 16, 2004); Publisher: John Murray

The Iliad (Penguin Classics)
- by Homer - Peter Jones (Editor), D.C.H. Rieu (Editor), E.V. Rieu (Translator)
"The Illiad" is the culmination of a long-standing oral tradition. The oral technique enabled a master bard like
Homer to develop what may historically have been an event of minor importance into a fully fledged epic. So,
out of a single episode in the legendary Trojan War - Achilles' withdrawal from the fighting and his return to kill
the Trojan hero, Hector - Homer generated the 24 books of "The Illiad". What the oral technique does not
automatically provide, however, is the genius of the poem which is rendered here in E.V. Rieu's translation,
which has been revised for this edition by his son, D.C.H. Rieu and Peter Jones. Homer has created a timeless, dramatic tragedy. His characters are heroic but their passions and problems are human and
universal, and he presents them with compassion, understanding and humour against the harsh background of the war and the quarrels of the gods.
Paperback 560 pages (January 30, 2003); Publisher: Penguin Books Ltd
The Aeneid (Penguin Classics)
- by Virgil - David West (Translator) Virgil's Aeneid, inspired by Homer and inspiration for Dante and Milton, is an immortal poem at the heart of
Western life and culture. Virgil took as his hero Aeneas, legendary survivor of the fall of Troy and father of
the Roman race, and in telling a story of dispossession and defeat, love and war, he portrayed human life in all its nobility and suffering.
Paperback 368 pages (March 27, 2003); Publisher: Penguin Books Ltd

Friends of Cirali
Welcome to Friends of Cirali, a website dedicated to the conservation and well being of Cirali, Olympos Beach
and the surrounding areas. We believe there are few places left in Turkey, perhaps the entire Mediterranean,
that are as pure and as beautiful as Olimpos Beach. It is essential that we come together in order to protect this paradise so that future generations can also enjoy this gift of nature.
Perhaps the most striking element in Cirali is Olympos Beach. Surrounded by glorious mountains, blessed with
crystal clear waters and so large it never feels crowded even in peak season. The beach is under protection
as it is a nesting ground for sea turtles. As such, you will not find any banana boats or para gliders anywhere in sight. Heaven! We aim to keep it this way.
Kalkan Turkey
The historic town of Kalkan, Turkey is an enchanting place and one of the most beautiful locations along
Turkey's gorgeous Lycian Coast. With the complete absence of mass tourism, Kalkan remains a charming
and unspoiled haven of lush nature, brilliant blue crystal-clear sea, historic architecture, ancient history and warm traditional Turkish hospitality.
Lycian Turkey - Discover the Beauty of Ancient Lycia
Southwest Turkey, along and inland from the popular "Turquoise Coast", was home to the ancient Lycians
who were one of the most enigmatic people of antiquity. Although little historical record has been left behind
them, what has been discovered reveals a fascinating people culturally distinct from the rest of the ancient
world. Around twenty major sites remain today with the Lycians' unusual funerary architecture dominating the breath-taking unspoiled land of Lycia.
