Jostedal Glacier National Park - Jostedalsbreen - Sognefjord Norway
The valley of Jostedalen offers spectacular scenery, mainly shaped by glacial erosion. Glacial faults and
fractures underneath the glacier have favoured erosional forces, garving out valleys, hanging valleys, cirques and mountain passes from the old mountainous plain.
The largest glacier in Northern Europe, Jostedalsbreen, 487 km2 , covers the high mountain plateau northwest
of Jostedalen. 22 named outlets - "glacial arms or tongues" - flow from the plateau glacier, 11 of these into the
hanging valleys running more or less vertically to the main valley, Jostedalen. Hanging valleys are found on both sides and can be seen as bowl-shaped openings high up on the hillsides.
The most famous glacial outlets are Nigardsbreen, Bergsetbreen and Austdalsbreen.

Telemark - Tourist Board Telemark
Telemark is one of Norway's foremost vacation areas. This is due to a number of factors; the area's natural
scenic beauty, the nice climate, its rich culture, commerce and communications, - all play important roles. The
diversity of the landscape adds excitement to the area. Sea swept rocky shores merge with open farmlands,
vast forests and narrow valleys. Steep mountains plunge into bottomless lakes or widen into endless mountain moors rolling onward to the horizon.

History of Norway
Independence: 26 October 1905 (from Sweden)
Historia Norwegie - by Inger Ekrem (Editor), Peter Fischer (Translator)
The fragmentary medieval chronicle, Historia Norwegie, is the oldest piece of historical writing from Norway,
and probably our first specimen of Norwegian literature. It was composed in Latin in the second half of the
twelfth century, perhaps in the Oslo area. We only possess the beginning of the work, but it offers, among
other things, a detailed report of a shamanic seance among the Sami as well as a unique early geographical
description of Norway and the North Sea realm. Furthermore we are presented with an early version of the
Norwegian kings' genealogy, beginning with the mythical Yngling kings and ending, abruptly, with Olav
Haraldsson's claim to the throne in 1015. This is the first critical edition of the Latin text since 1880,
accompanied by a new English translation by Peter Fisher. The introduction and full commentary in English takes stock of previous scholarship and makes new contributions to the interpretation of the text.
Paperback 245 pages (January 2003); Publisher: Museum Tusculanum Press; ASIN 8772898135
Document Project
At the four Universities in Norway there are many museums and collections that contain information on a wide
range of aspects of Norwegian language and culture. The Viking Ship Museum at Bygdøy, Oslo, and the historical museums and the museums of natural history in Bergen, Oslo, Trondheim, and Tromsø are well
-known. However, there are other, less well-known collections that are comprehensive and important. Some
of these are: Norsk Folkeminnesamling (the Norwegian Collection of Folklore), Norsk folkemusikksamling (the
Norwegian Collection of Folk Music), Myntkabinettet (the Collection of Coins and Medals), Runearkivet (The
Runes Archives), and large collections of place names and other aspects of the Norwegian language.
The links in bold will take you to information in English, whereas links in plain text will take you to the archives, which in general are in Norwegian.
Medieval Scandinavia
Norway is much more than beautiful fjords and the midnight sun. The Norwegians have a long and exciting
history as well, of which many exciting objects are on display around in the country. Medieval Scandinavia will guide you through some of that history.
Norwegian Historical Data Centre
Our main aim is to computerize the Norwegian censuses 1865 onwards together with the parish registers
and other sources from the 18th and 19th centuries. The ultimate goal is a national population register for the
18th and 19th centuries, primarily for research purposes, but also for the benefit of schools, genealogists, local historians, etc.

Exploring the Northern Tradition: A Guide to the Gods, Lore, Rites, and Celebrations from the Norse,
German, and Anglo-Saxon Traditions Swain Wodening (Foreword), Galina Krasskova Exploring The Northern Tradition is an introduction to the modern reconstruction of the ancient religion of the
Germanic and Scandinavian peoples. This religion, called Heathenry, is one of the fastest growing polytheistic
religious movements in the Western world today. This book provides a thorough guide to the cosmology,
values, ethics and rituals practiced by modern Heathens. It crosses denominational lines, examining practices
common to all branches of Heathenry in an easily accessible format. Readers will have the opportunity to
explore the sacred stories of the various Heathen Gods, like Odin, Frigga, Freya and Thor and the devotional
practices of modern votaries. The most common devotional rite - the faining or biot - is examined in rich detail,
with examples given for personal use. Every new concept covered is presented in a clear and easy-to-understand manner. Readers will come away from this book with a thorough knowledge of what the
Heathen community is like and what newcomers to that community can expect. Experienced Heathens will
find a wealth of lore and inter-denominational critique that will make this book an excellent addition to their libraries.

Fiddling for Norway: Revival and Identity (Chicago Studies in Ethnomusicology) By C. Goertzen
This is a portrait of a fiddle-based folk revival in Norway, one that in many ways parallels contemporary folk
institutions and festivals throughout the world, including American fiddling. It is a detailed case study in the
politics of culture, the causes and purposes of folk revivals, and the cultivation of music to define identity. The
book begins with an investigation of the people and events important to Norwegian folk fiddling, tracing the
history of Norwegian folk music and the growth and diversification of the folk music revival. The narrative
takes us to local fiddle clubs, concerts and competitions on the local, regional, and national levels, and shows
how conflicting emphases - local versus national identity, tradition versus aesthetic qualities - continue to
transform Norwegian folk music. Goertzen utilizes a large anthology of meticulously-transcribed tunes to
illustrate personal and regional repertoires, aspects of performance practice, melodic gesture and form, and tune relationships.
