Chisenau - Capital City of Moldova
Situated in a beautiful valley of the river Bac. The first record of the settlement dates from 1436, by that time
the town extended over the seven surrounding hills. In the beginning a small market town, Chisinau became in
the XIX c. the administrative centre of Basarabia. The city quickly evolved. In a short time numerous buildings
were constructed in different architectural styles. Roads, new services and agricultural markets appeared.
Chisinau became unique through the original creations of well-known architects such as Bernardazzi,
Sciusev, etc. In this City many significant personalities have lived and worked, including, while he was in exile, the Russian poet A. Pushkin.
Surrounded by green parks, the centre of the City has preserved its houses from the XIX c., without too many high buildings.
Balti
Balti, the so-called "Northern capital" of Moldova, is known as far back as 1421. The locality obtained its name
from the local swamps, and later all the environs retained the same name for a large area, known today as
the Balti Steppe. In 1711 Balti was the location for the alliance of the headquarters staffs of the Ruler of
Moldova Dmitrie Cantemir and Russian tzar Petru I, during the "Prut' Campaign" against Turkish janisaries.
Latter, with the development of a rail interchange, the importance of Balti rose, and it became a big industrial centre.
Cahul - balneo–climateric station Nufarul Alb
Well known in Moldova and the former Soviet Union countries. Thermal mineral water and clean air from the
Lower Prut region enhance the curative value of the resort. This locality was first recorded in 1452, but an
archaeological investigation affirms that it is much older. It developed not far from a crossing over the Prut
river, but has been the scene of many military confrontations. Tartars and Turks have sacked this locality
many times. Only at the end of XIXth century, after a battle at Cahul between Moldo-Russian and Turkish
armies, have the attacks ceased, and the Cahul region became an important commercial centre in the south of Moldova.

Soroca Soroca always has been a fortress town at the Nistru River crossing. The Genovian traders called this place
Olihonia. Later it appears in documents as Soroca (1499). Recognising its strategic importance many Rulers
have consolidated the walls of Soroca fortress: Stefan cel Mare, Petru Rares, etc. In its present shape the
fortress was made by craftsmen from Transilvania in 1543-1546. It is perfectly round, with five bastions
situated at equal distances from each other. Only soldiers lived in the citadel, but during sieges the natives
could find protection there too. There is an old legend about the white stork and Soroca fortress. It says that,
during a long siege, the starving defenders survived thanks to their courage and a white stork, which brought
them bunches of grapes. Today a stork with bunches in its beak is one of the symbols of Moldova.
Now a regional centre with big squares, modernised streets, hospitals, grammar schools, conventionalised
churches, etc. In the Soviet period the town became an important industrial centre for the north of Moldova.
Tighina
Near the oldest Nistru gorge, in the third century B.C., there was a human settlement in Tighina. Later there
appeared the first palisade and earthwork fortifications. The first documentary mention of "Tighina Fortress"
was in 1408. In the reign of Petru Rares the fortress was rebuilt in stone. Its walls have survived to the
present and offer an example of classic Moldavian defensive construction. In 1538 Tighina was conquered
by the Turkish Empire and re-named Bender. The Russians conquered it in 1812. Today the fortress serves
as a base for the 14th Russian Army. In Tighina's historical centre two old churches from the XIXth century
can be visited. You can also find the History Museum here. In Varnita, a Tighina suburb, the Carol XIIth
Museum is worth visiting (Carol XII is the Swedish King, who took refuge here after losing the Battle of
Poltava to the Russians). Varnita is also well known for its mineral water spring, which has remarkable curative properties, appreciated at home and abroad.
Tiraspol
Tiraspol derives from a Greek word "the town on the Nistru". Tiraspol appeared on Moldova's map in 1792
during the Russian and Turkish battle near Bender Fortress. In just a few months, a fortress with 3 towers was constructed to strengthen the positions of the Russian Army lead by Alexander Suvorov. After
Basarabia's annexation to Russia, the fortress was transformed into a prison (where, during the Czarist
regime, many Decabrists were held). It was later destroyed. Today we can see the ruins of only one tower.
Tiraspol is a Green Town with a beautiful leisure zone on the banks of the Nistru. There is an old Tree Garden
in the centre of the town. You can also visit The History Museum, T. Sevcenco University, the Drama Theatre,
monuments to A. Suvorov and the Decabrist V. Raievscki. An interesting trip can be organized to Moldova's
great geo-palaeonthologic monument – Valceana Colcot. The locals are very fond of their resort area near lake Cuciurgan.

Cuisine
Nature is very generous in Moldova, offering plentiful grapes, fruits, vegetables, meat and milk products and
cereals, all of which have found their uses in Moldova's national food. Moldovan cuisine has had a great
influence on the traditional food of the other nationalities that live on this territory. At the same time some
elements have been incorporated from Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Gagauzian and Russian cuisine, as well as elements taken some centuries ago from Greek and Turkish food.
In different parts of Moldova there are local cuisines. In the East the Ukrainians prefer borsch, in the south the
Bulgarians can offer a delicious chicken sauce – mangea, and the Gagauzians may serve you şorpa – a
spicy ram soup, and the Russians will offer you their traditional pelmeni – a kind of roll stuffed with meat.
The Moldovan cuisine is served with a variety of traditional drinks: stewed fruits, juices, as well as alcoholic drinks like: wine, brandy, "tuica" – plum brandy, etc.
