The Making of Christian Malta: From the Early Middle Ages to 1530 - by Anthony Luttrell
Dr Luttrell's work has helped change our understanding of the history of the small islands of Malta and Gozo,
providing a more coherent story of the ways in which, during the Middle Ages, a small isolated Muslim community was converted into a more prosperous outpost of Roman Christianity with a unique cultural
mixture of Arabic speech and European institutions. This selection of studies places the process within the
context of developments in the medieval Mediterranean world and combines archaeological and architectural
investigations with work in Maltese, Sicilian and other archives, with a particular focus on ecclesiastical
matters; a new introduction brings the subject up to date. The work is of relevance to scholars of Islam and
Christianity, while providing insights into the nature of an unusual island community whose significance far exceeds its size.

History of Gozo
Gozo meaning "joy" in Castillian, is the name the Aragonese gave this island, when they possesed it in 1282.
The idea of joy and pleasure is also conveyed by its Latin motto "Fertilis ab undis caput effero - a fruit land
raising its head from the sea". The Phoenicians, when it was theirs in 700BC, called it "Gwl" or Gaulos,
meaning a round ship, possibly in reference to the island's shape from a distance, a name which the romans
kept when they took it over in 218AD. The Arabs, who came to rule this piece of land a thousand years ago,
and who strongly influenced its Semitic language, left behind the name that has stuck in the vernacular: Ghawdex (pronounced Aw-desh). See Island of Gozo for more.
History of Malta - WikipediA
Malta has been inhabited since around 5200 BC and a significant prehistoric civilisation existed on the islands
prior to the arrival of the Phoenicians who named the main island Malat, meaning safe haven. The islands later
came under the control first of Carthage (400 BC) and then of Rome, before being conquered by Arabs in A.D
. 870, who would greatly influence local culture, notably in the Maltese language. In 1127 they were finally
replaced by the Sicilian Normans, after which Malta became Christian again. After this time, the Maltese
Nobility was created; it dates back to the Norman Conquest in A.D. 1090. The Nobility is still around today. 32
titles are still used by the Maltese, the eldest still in use being: Barons of Djar il Bniet and Buqana.
In 1530 the islands were given to the Order of Knights of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem by Spain ......
