Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

Districts in Luxembourg : Diekirch, Grevenmacher and Luxembourg

Cities / villages in Luxembourg : Beaufort, Betzdorf, Diekirch, Esch-Sur-Alzette, Etterlbruck, Heiderscheid, Luxembourg [ national capital ] and Mullertal.

Luxembourg can be divided into two clearly defined regions:

a. The "Eisléck" or 'Oesling' in the north, which is part of the Ardennes, on the western rim of the Eifel, and covers one-third of the territory. It is a wooded country of great scenic beauty;
b. The 'Good country' in the centre and the south, covering the remainder of the territory, is mainly rolling farmland and woods. It is bordered in the east by the wine-producing valley of the Moselle, and in the extreme south west by a narrow strip of red earth which forms the Luxembourg iron-ore basin.

Cuisine

Luxembourg is truly a gastronomer's delight. The country boasts more Michelin stars per square mile (or per inhabitant) than anybody else.
Most traditional dishes are of peasant origin, but Luxembourg's affinities with both French and German culture, have long ago been translated into the country's speciality foods.

History of Luxembourg

 Independence: 1839

The written history of Lucilinburhuc (i.e. Luxembourg) starts in the year 963, when Siegfried, Count of the Ardennes, and founder of the Luxembourg Dynasty, had a castle built on the territory of the present-day capital of Luxembourg.

 Saint Willibrord - born in Northumbria in 658
In the year 690 he crossed over to the European mainland with 11 companions, to bring the Christian faith to the people of the Frisians, who had so far resisted evangelisation. Willibrord was able to found a monastery in Echternach, where he liked to retire to prepare his missionary expeditions to restless Frisia, and as far as Denmark and Thuringia. Before he died at the unusual age of 81 years, he had organised his succession and allotted his rich possessions. Very soon after his death he was venerated as a saint, so that more and more pilgrims came to his grave, and about 800 AD the modest Merovingian church had to make room for a larger, three-aisle church, which was over 60 metres long.
The 'Dancing Procession' to honour him takes place every year on Whit Tuesday, and attracts thousands of participants and an equal number of spectators

 Secrets of the Seven Smallest States of Europe: Andorra, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City
Thomas Eccardt
This unique book examines the history, culture and inner workings of the seven smallest independent countries in Europe. These are among the oldest lands in Europe, despite their diversity, they have much in common. Most have relatively high per capita incomes and life expectancies, and relatively low unemployment . This narrative first presents the many unique issues that confront small countries, including maintaining their independence, economic viability, native languages, and forms of government. The second part of the book describes each microstate in turn, showing how each one has met these challenges and adapted over time. These concise and engaging histories contain cultural information on subjects including the arts, gastronomy and popular tourist sites.
Paperback 300 pages (June 1, 2004); Publisher: Hippocrene Books, Inc.; Language: English; ISBN: 0781810329.
