It is a mountainous and hilly region, which includes part of the Maritime Alps and the Ligurian Apennines,
whose the spurs plunge almost everywhere into the sea, leaving scant space to the plains, which form a
narrow coastline. Here landscapes of great beauty can be admired. The region is divided in two sections: the
Riviera di Ponente (to the west), from Ventimiglia to Genoa, and the Riviera di Levante (to the east), from
Genoa to La Spezia. The terminal strip of the Riviera di Levante is known as "Le Cinque Terre" (the Five Lands) and still today represents a beautiful example of intact landscape.

Riviera dei Fiori
Tourists arriving in the Riviera dei Fiori have a hard time making up their mind. Should they seek out beaches,
sun and surf ? Or coastal towns bustling both day and night? They're right here. Or perhaps the mountains,
refreshing hikes in the woods, and fresh air? Or medieval villages nestled on the slopes with towers,
historical dwellings and old churches? They're here too.And then the old-fashioned cooking with garden vegetables and freshly caught fish. The famous extra virgin olive oil and special wines. Valle Intemelia
- Intermelia Valley The terraced slopes of the Nervia Valley add a touch of colour to that majestic untamed land that nature clad
only in forest and stone: Rows of vines produce the warm autumnal tones on the landscape, a glorious
prelude to the robust rustic flavours that come with the grape-harvest. Olive trees reflect silver to complete the spectrum and adorn the territory. Valli Argentina e Armea
- Argentina and Armea Valleys Who has never been faced with the dilemma: "This year... to the sea or the mountains?" Yet there are places
that can combine opposites e.g. the Armea and Argentina valleys, splendid mountain areas between Liguria
and Piedmont rich in nature and history where you can also breathe the sea air. After all the grand, majestic
Mount Saccarello is less than 30 km as the crow flies from the inviting golden sands of Arma di Taggia. Valle Olivo - Olivio Valley
Extensive, thick olive groves have, for centuries, succeeded one another inland from Imperia. A sea of olive
trees spreads uniformly over the landscape, following the undulating line of "fasce". In this protective
mountain hollow marine breezes and limpid air bring changing reflections to the rustling leafy branches. On
the slopes of the Olivo hills, filled with tepid and almost imperceptible shimmers of light, you will discover and rediscover gleaming strong stone houses and villages. Valle Arroscia
- Arroscia Valley Always a place of transit between western Liguria and lower Piedmont and long fought over by Genoa and
Savoy, the Arroscia Valley unpretentiously offers historical and environmental treasures of considerable charm.

Discovered by German and British holidaymakers in the 1920s, by the 1950s tourism had supplanted the
fishing boats. Portofino thus became a favourite with, among others, Princess Grace and Richard Burton and
Liz Taylor. Set within an area of stunning natural beauty, the protected Parco Naturale Regionale di Portofino, the town today is a chic berth for the yachts of the rich and famous.
Savona - Comune di Savona
San Remo - San Remo Promotion A marvellous slice of old-world Riviera grandeur, San Remo was a hugely fashionable resort around the turn
of the twentieth century, rivalling Nice on the French side of the Riviera. It has a casino to rival that in Monte
Carlo and still has some superbly ritzy hotels. The heyday of the early 1900s saw the glitterati descend from
all over Europe ... there was a sizable Russian emigre community and Tchaikovsky composed Eugene Onegin here in the 1870s. A very classy way to enjoy the Italian Riviera.

History Liguria / Genoa
Republic of Genoa - Wikipedia The Republic of Genoa, in full the Most Serene Republic of Genoa (known as the Ligurian Republic from 1798
to 1805) was an independent state in Liguria on the northwestern Italian coast from ca. 1100 to 1805, when it was annexed by Napoleonic France....
Following the fall of Napoleon, Liguria was absorbed into the Kingdom of Savoy and Sardinia, one of the many
kingdoms and principalities that were to form the unified Italy. That came with the victory of Garibaldi and his army in 1861 ... when the Duchy of Genoa became merely the Italian region of Liguria.

Genoa and the Genoese, 958-1528
- Steven A. Epstein In this comprehensive history of Genoa, Steven Epstein traces the city's transformation from an obscure port
into the capital of a small but thriving republic with an extensive overseas empire. His story bridges six
centuries of medieval Renaissance history, interweaving political events, economic trends, social conditions,
and cultural accomplishments. Profiling the ordinary men and women of Genoa as well as the nobles and
merchants who governed the city, Epstein seeks to capture the full richness and eclectic nature of the Genoese people during their most vibrant centuries.
