Vacation in Calabria  -  Calabria Vacations.

The Calabria Region is divided into five provinces : Catanzaro, Cosenza, Crotone, Reggio di Calabria and Vibo Valentia.

Cities: Cosenza, Crotone and Vibo Valentia.

In the extreme south west of Italy, washed by the Tyrrhenian and lonian Sea, Calabria occupies the "toe" of the Italian peninsula south of Naples. It is bounded in the north by the region of Basilicata, to the west by the Tyrrhenian Sea, and to the east by the Ionian Sea. Calabria faces the island of Sicily across the Strait of Messina.

Calabria is an essentially mountainous region, with a high central Apennine ridge, which crosses it lengthwise. The mountain slopes are overgrown with thick woods. The coastlines present landscapes of wild beauty.

Capital City of Calabria: Catanzaro

National Parks

In the heart of the Mediterranean, between the sea and the mountains, with a mild climate thanks to the sea, the province territory is characterised by thick chestnut tree, beech, holm oax and white fir tree forests, that alternate with olive and grape groves, secular fiumare and overhanging coasts covered in ferns, brooms, arbutus, myrtles, oleanders and prickly pears.
The coastline that goes from Villa S. Giovanni to Gioiosa Ionica presents the natural habitat for bergamot cultivation. The territory's fauna presents different species of birds, and amongst them we find the black woodpecker, the great eagle, the harrier eagle and the pecchiaiolo hawk, also called adorno, that in springtime crosses the Messina Strait from Africa to procreate in Europe.

 Old Calabira  -  Norman Douglas
Among the finest books of travel in the English language, Old Calabria is Norman Douglas' account of his visits to the wild country of southern Italy in the early years of the twentieth century
Then, as now, Calabria was relatively ignored by traditional tourists. But Norman Douglas, the unrepentant pagan, was no traditional tourist. With his inexhaustible fund of erudition, wit and elegant literary style he conducts the reader from the promontory of Gargano to the tip of Aspromonte; through the influences of its many invaders - Greek colonists, Norman feudal lords, Spaniards and Angevins until its absorption into the corrupt Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Delicate, allusive, urbane and civilized, it is recognized as a classic for its vivid evocation of the life, language, history and customs of Europe's most colourful extremity. Its literary quality puts it in a class of its own.

Stolen Figs, and Other Adventures in Calabria - Mark Rotella
Experience the adventure of exploring one's family roots in a small village in southern Italy: taste the food, kiss the relatives, explore the terrain, climb the mountains, visit the castles, learn the history (Greeks, Bruttians, Romans, Visigoth conquests) ... The village, Gimigilano, is located in Calabria, the region that looks like the foot on a map of Italy, which everyone knows resembles a boot. The author, Mark Rotella, describes his very *first* visit to this village with his father and later subsequent visits either alone or with his wife, who is of Engish and Dutch heritage. He captivates the reader with descriptions of nostalgia and heart-felt longing when he emotionally connects to the traditions, customs and life of the village. He is befriended by Giuseppe, a photographer, who produces postcards that he sells to regional shops and businesses. Giuseppe becomes his personal driver and tour guide to Calabria ...

Seen from the plane the province of Reggio Calabria, extreme tip of the italian boot, looks like an enormous mountain caressed by the sea.
Aspromonte, between Palmi and Capo Zefiro, south from Locri, touches the sea with its spurs, that become sea-depths of evocative colours; in the north it embraces from one side the Piana di Gioia Tauro, with its ample terraces that descend green in olive and orange groves between S. Cristina and Delianuova, and from the other side it stretches out into the crest of Melia, that grows like a long arm to the borders of Vibo Valentia's Province. Aspromonte is the main character of the province: it dominates most of the territory and, thanks to the National Park it's still a guardian of great forests, and of torrents that fall down hill with evocative waterfalls to become lakes, or to disappear into streams. But also the sea is everywhere, with its charm, its colours and its lights. Long and warm beaches delineate its coastlines, opening towards the so close Sicily and the great Etna, that are a completing part to the landscape, and that are visible from the first part of the ionic coast, from the Viola Coast, from Palmi and from Aspromonte.
The province is rich with contraddictions, the colours are both violent and delicate: the purple of the Tyrrhenian sea, the pale blue of the Ionian, the deep green of the moors on the rocky slopes of Scilla and Bagnara, and the green of the orange groves which is everywhere on the plains. And then the smells: the sweet jasmine of the ionic coast, the strong oregano along the cliffs that overlook the mountains, an unbelievable quantity of medicinal herbs, the smell of the sea, full of balmy moistures that mix together, along the seascape, with the bittersweet smell of citrus fruits and bergamot, that bears fruit only in this territory, or the smell of the oil of just pressed olives.

Cuisine - Italian Cooking

The characteristic ingredient of the reggina cooking is chilli, which has been used by the imagination of many producers to create many new products that are now mixed with the traditional ones.
Pork products (soppressata, capicollo, filetti, 'nduja), traditional cheese, the "rosamarina", also known as "the caviar of the South" (spicy new-born sardines), and extra virgin olive oil are the winning tickets for those who are hard to please. Not to forget the unique art of the preserves, thanks to which the products of nature (tomato sauce, mushrooms, aubergines, tuna and many more products), picked and preserved are able to keep the garden scents and the colours of the passed seasons intact.

Music, Culture & Entertainment

The artistic heritage of Reggio Calabria's province reflects its historical events and guards priceless treasures of prehistorical times and Magna Graecia's culture. Many places still witness the culture of this land , like the byzantine –norman spirituality, S.Giovanni Terrestì Basilica in Bivongi or Gerace's Cathedral, or some private buildings, like Villa Caristo in Stignano, built in the XVIII century, Villa Palizzi in Casignana, which still presents an untouched floor mosaic, and Villa del Naniglio in Gioiosa Jonica.

Tropea is one of the most beautiful towns in Calabria lies along the south Tyrrhenian coast.
Austere and majestic, Tropea rises out of the promontory of Monte Poro which lies between the two gulfs of Sant'Eufemia and Gioia. It overlooks a mirror-like sky-blue, crystal-clear sea, with its incredible rocks: "La Pizzuta", "Formicoli", "San Leonardo" and "Isola Bella".
The wild, white, sandy beaches which snake their way into little grottoes and creeks are interrupted by valleys and fertile, rippling hills full of fruit and citrus fruit trees, onion and vegetable fields, lime trees, bougainvillaea, verbena, jasmine and other sweet-smelling Mediterranean plants.
