Vacation in Basilicata - Basilicata Vacations.
The region Basilicata is divided into two provinces: Potenza and Matera.
Basilicata is a region in the south of Italy, bordering on Campania to the west, Puglia to the east, Calabria to the south.
The region is mountainous [ crossed from north to south by the Lucan Apennine mountain chain. These mountains, with
the exception of the Pollino Massif, on the Calabria border, and the Sirino to the southwest, do not go above a height of 2,000 metres ], arid and scarcely watered. It has two coastlines, one in the
center of the Gulf of Taranto in the Ionian Sea, and a tiny one on the Tyrrhenian Sea, with the famous sea resort of Maratea. The bare mountain landscapes slope down to the Ionian Sea.
The most
important rivers - the Sinni, the Agri, the Basento, and the Bradano - spring from the Apennines and flow into the lonian Sea, characterizing much of the region's orographic
appearance and climate.

National Parks
Parco Nazionale del Pollino With its 192,565 hectares, Pollino National Park, the largest protected area in Italy between Calabria and
Basilicata, has a wealth of landscapes to offer: great areas of wilderness where the cuirassed pine -the true
emblem of the park- clings to the rocky slopes as the wind shapes its twisted trunk; not far away, rolling hills
and valleys, lush slopes with flowering plants in springtime, and then endless upland plains where the sheep still graze like in ancient times.
From east to west, the eye meets the sea and the coast is within easy reach despite the considerable altitude
of the mountains. The solitude of the highest peaks dominated by the majestic flight of the golden eagle is
juxtaposed to the common reality of the anthropic environment: small villages where the old women still wear
their traditional garb not far from larger towns hosting important cultural events that attract visitors. In this
territory survive groups of ethnic Albanians that tenaciously preserve their Arbėreshe (Italian-Albanian)
cultural and linguistic traditions as well as the archaeological remains of civilizations that have dominated this area over the centuries.

History
History of Basilicata - WikipediA In Roman times the district was called Lucania and was administrated together with the district of Bruttii, to
the south. The district of Lucania was so called from the people bearing the name Lucani (Lucanians), who
invaded the country about the middle of the 5th century BCE, driving the indigenous tribes, known to the
Greeks as Oenotrians and Chones, into the mountainous interior. The coasts on both sides were occupied by powerful Greek colonies, part of Magna Graecia .......
