 Debrecen - a town wrapped in sunshine
The name of the town appeared in the Várad Regestrum of 1235 for the first time in written documents. Debrecen was only one of the little villages in the region until the beginning of the 13th century. Owing to its landlords it had grown to be a major settlement in the period after the invasion of the Tartars, by the beginning of the 14th century. The Saint Andrew Church was built in early Gothic style in 1311. The Parish Council was formed in 1332; in 1361 the settlement received the privilege of market-town from Louis I (the Great), who granted the town the right of electing its own judges and that a citizen of Debrecen could not be brought before the court in a strange place; then in 1405 Sigismund granted the town privileges that only Buda, the capital had owned before: the people of Debrecen were entitled to hold two country-wide markets every year and were permitted to build a wall around the town.

Cuisine - Hungarian recipes

Hungarian cooking isn't all gulyás [ goulash ] and heavily spiced paprika dishes, just in the same way as Italian isn't all pasta and Indian hot spices. Hungarian dishes have a distinctive, unmistakable character of their own, often rich with sour cream, onions, eggs, butter and wine. An abundance of good local produce, meat and fish make for dishes such as Halászlé [ vissoep ], Sült libamájszelet [ in pan gebakken ganzelever ], Almával töltött fácán [ met appel gevulde fazant ], Szarvastokány erdei gombával (venison stew with wild mushrooms) and Fogasszelet bakonyi módra (fillet of pike-perch Bakony style).

Independence: 1001 [ unification by King Stephen I ]

Tradition holds that Hungary was founded by Árpád, who led the Magyars into the Pannonian plains in the 9th century. The Kingdom of Hungary was established in 1000 by King St. Stephen I. Initially the history of Hungary was developed in a triangle with that of Poland and Bohemia, with the many liaisons with Popes and Emperors of the Holy Roman Empire.
Gradually Hungary turned into a large, independent kingdom which formed a distinct Central European culture with ties to greater West European civilisation.
