National Park

 National Park Oosterschelde
Oosterschelde National Park lies in the heart of the Delta region. It is the largest national park in the Netherlands covering an area of 37,000 hectares.
There's lots to see and experience for the nature buffs during the many excursions. One can also walk, sail or cycle in the area. The Oosterschelde is constantly changing under the influence of the wind and especially the tide. At low tide the sandplates and salt
marshes appear. A great number of birds gather here in search of food while seals relax on the plates and nurse their young. At high tide the plates and salt marshes disappear again and the birds move on to the higher, more vegetated salt marshes, or to the polders and creaks behind the inner dikes. They wait on these elevated sanctuaries till the tide goes out again. Apart from fish, there are plants and animals living below the water level that are usually found on rocky coastlines. There are several museums and information centres along the banks of the Oosterschelde.

In the 17th century Flushing was a main harbour for ships of the East Indian Company (VOC). It is also known as the birthplace of Admiraal Michiel de Ruyter. Oost-Souburg and Ritthem also belong to the municipality of Flushing.

History of Zeeland

The sea was for the 'Zeeuwen' an enemy, but also their daily bread & living. Many still earn their money with fishing.

 Vlissingen
In the centuries of its growth Vlissingen was especially well known as the centre of (herring) fishery, commerce, privateering and slave trade. The history of Vlissingen is characterized by oppression, bombardments and floods. All this as a consequence of Vlissingen's strategic position at the river Schelde.

He who ruled Vlissingen owned the most important passageway to the docks of Antwerp. For this reason the eyes of several foreign powers fell on Vlissingen. British, French, Germans and Spaniards, they were all within the cities boundaries long before the tourists were there.
The heyday of the Golden Age, in which ships from Vlissingen sailed all seas and attributed to the world power of 'De Zeven Provincien' [ The Seven Provinces ] was followed by a recession in the eighteenth century. Especially the effects of the Napoleonic wars were disastrous. After 1870 a period of revival occurred as a result of the building of new docks, the canal through Walcheren, the railway and the establishment of the shipyard called The Schelde. The Second World War interrupted this growth. Again bombardments, shelling and inundation heavily damaged the city.
