History of Belgium
Independence: 4 October 1830 from the Netherlands
The art of tapestries flourished in medieval Flanders. They brought color and warmth to the bare stone walls
of the castles. Throughout the 16th and 17th century, the ateliers of Brussels produced tapestries
unsurpassed in their artistic brilliance. On festive days such as the Brussels Ommegang, or "Joyous Entries"
of sovereigns and governors, streets and facades were adorned with exquisite tapestry hangings. Silk, gold
and silver threads were used in the weft for royal orders. Sometimes precious stones gave the tapestries an
added luster. At that time, generations of art dealers, located in Antwerp, had commercial relations with all
important european towns, and sent hundreds of tapestries to Vienna, Venice, London, Paris, Madrid, Krakow, Lisbon, etc... All merchants of the new American colonies were represented there.
