Books about Albania

Albania, The Bradt Travel Guide - By Gillian Gloyer (Author)
Albania is perhaps the last hidden corner of eastern Europe, newly opening its frontiers to travelers after decades of tyranny and instability. Written by an insider and Albania enthusiast, the Bradt guide to Albania takes a fresh look at how and where to explore the heritage of a country influenced by the Greeks, Romans, Italians, and Turks--who have all left their mark on the landscape and culture. Albania boasts a breathtaking natural beauty, splendid and empty beaches, excellent local wines, a Mediterranean climate, and a tradition of hospitality, making it a potentially prime holiday destination, easily accessible by air, ferry via the Greek islands and Italy, or even by road via mainland Greece, Montenegro, or Kosovo.
Paperback: 280 pages; Publisher: Bradt Travel Guides; 2.00 edition (August 1, 2006); Language: English; ISBN-13: 978-1841621494

Berati - City of a Thousand Windows - see also United-Albania.com
Berati, a city in south central Albania. Located near the Osum River, Berat is the commercial center for the surrounding agricultural region in which tobacco, grapes, and fruits are grown. The town of Berat, overshadowed to the east by mount Tomorr (2400m), is built on an ancient Illyrian dwelling site, which goes back to the sixth century B.C. Its innumerable monuments and beautiful and characteristic architecture of its houses have proclaimed Berat, a museum town.
 Durres
One of Albania's oldest cities, the country's main sea port, the second largest industrial center after Tirana. Durres lies on a small peninsula on the coast of the Adriatic sea.
The legend says that it was founded by Epidamnos, the Illyrian King of the area, who called it by his own name and named the port area after his grandson - Dyrrah
 Elbasan
Elbasan is the site of the ancient city of Skampa founded in the 1st century A.D. It came into being and developed during the construction of the Egnatia route - a main road artery in the land communications and trade and commercial interchanges between the Apennine Peninsula, on one side and the Balkan Peninsula and the East on the other.

 Peshkopia
Peshkopia lies on the eastern part of Albania, on either side of the Black Drini river. The Drini valley is the lowest part of the district. The Korabi peak (2751 m) is the country's highest peak, which is situated in this district. Peshkopia has a population of 10,000 inhabitants. Mineral ores such as chromium, sulphur, marble have been discovered in this district. The thermal mineral water springs are situated in the vicinity of Peshkopia and have important medicinal values.
 Pogradec
On the top of the hill overlooking Pogradec there is an ancient Illyrian fortress believed to have been known as Encheleana. In the Middle Ages this fortress was reconstructed and the place was renamed by the Bulgarians, who invaded Southeastern Albania at this time. (Pogradec, Pod Grad - the place beneath the fortress ).
 Saranda
Saranda is situated in an open sea gulf, opposite the island of Corfu. The sea panorama, the variety of flora, favoured by the soft climate, make Saranda the preferred centre for rest and recreation and an important tourist town. Most Albanian couples come to spend their honey-moon in Saranda. That's why it is known in Albania as the town of the honey-mooners
 Shkodra
Shkodra was known as an old artisan centre, as well as road and river junction with a considerable transit trade. Shkodra (formerly Scutari) is the third largest town in Albania. It is one of the oldest towns in Europe, having been in the third century B.C. the capital of the Illyrian Kingdom of the Ardians whose queen was the Legendary Teuta.
