History of Barbados
Independence: 30 November 1966 from the UK
Barbados was uninhabited when first settled by the British in 1627, though Amerindian tribes had lived on the
island previously. Slaves worked the sugar plantations established on the island until 1834 when slavery was
abolished. The economy remained heavily dependent on sugar, rum, and molasses production through most of the 20th century.

A History of Barbados: From Amerindian Settlement to Nation-State : - Hilary McD. Beckles
This book is the first general history of Barbados written by a professional historian. Using a vigorous and
unbiased approach to the collective experience of all the island's inhabitants, the author traces the events and
ideas that shaped contemporary society. He examines the influences of the Amerindians, European colonisation, the sugar industry, the African slave trade, emancipation, the civil rights movement,
independence and nationalism. Dr Beckles has blended an impressive quantity of primary research and published literature to produce an exciting and provocative history of this island state.

Music, Culture & Entertainment
Barbados is home to spouge music, which is played on guitars, mandolins and drums, but is best known as a second home for Trinidadian calypso and soca, as well as a reggae/soca fusion called ragga-soca.
Caribbean music [ calypso, soca, ringbang, dub, steel pan, and, to a lesser extent, reggae ] dominate the local
scene, Barbadians are embraced by several other musical forms. This is borne out by the wide range of
musical festivals that Barbados hosts each year, including an international Jazz festival, an opera season and a gospel festival.
A-Z of Barbados Heritage
Sean Carrington, Henry Fraser, John Gilmore, Addington Forde Every aspect of Barbadian history, geography, culture and society is covered: from flying fish to Gary
Sobers; from chattel houses to rum shops and from the Landship to the six native types of lizard. The
sources of local legends and folklore share the page with the story of rum and the origins of the name
Bimshire, while the biographies of the great and the good jostle with the humorous stories of more colourful
characters. Each author has brought an impressive breadth of scholarship combined with a lively, highly
readable and often amusing style. This A-Z aims to be the definitive reference guide to the cultural heritage of Barbados
