In the late 19th Century, the arrival of the Qallunaat ([ he Inuit name for non-Inuit from the south ] radically altered the traditional lifestyle of the Inuit, which until then had been nomadic. Whalers, missionaries, and especially fur traders had a profound impact on Inuit life.

 Avataq Cultural Institute
The Avataq Cultural Institute was created in 1980 with a mandate to protect and promote Inuit language and culture in Nunavik.
Since its inception, the Institute has recognized the valuable role of Elders in Inuit society. As a result, it pushed for the creation of the Inuit Elders Conference, the first of which was held in Kangirsuk in 1981.
In Inuit culture, the Elders are the trustees of wisdom and knowledge that has been passed down over thousands of years. Since the arrival of the Qallunaat (non-Inuit) in the second half of the 19th century, Elders have seen their role in the community and family gravely diminished. However, they are still the only ones able to transmit the wealth of traditional Inuit culture to future generations.

Polar Race - Teams of two and three race the 350 miles to the Magnetic North Pole
The gruelling race starts from Resolute Bay in the former North West Territories of Canada. It takes the contestants some 350 miles, by ski or foot, across some of the most desolate terrain in the world to the 1996 certified position of the Magnetic North Pole. Just to survive in this terrain takes courage, but to race requires a willingness and determination beyond the norm.
The Polar Race is for those few hardy men and women who want to test their endurance to the very limit.
