Six years before the arrival of the Ship Hector to New Scotland in 1773 and 100 years before the Birth of Canada, the first Afro-Nova Scotians came to Pictou County. The American War of Independence resulted in the largest single influx of Blacks to the province and most of these Black Loyalists were free and formed the foundation of the modern day presence in Nova Scotia. During the industrial age of the 19th Century, Black citizens from Tracadie came to Pictou County and most settled in New Glasgow.

Although first visited by the explorer John Cabot, an Italian sailing for England, in 1497, Nova Scotia was first settled by the Acadian French under Sieur de Monts. They made their first capital, after a failed attempt in 1604 on Īle Ste. Croix in present-day New Brunswick, in 1605 at Port Royal, later renamed by the British to Annapolis Royal, which is located at the head of the Annapolis Basin, Nova Scotia...

 Hector Heritage Quay [ Pictou ] - see Town of Picttou
Offers unique insight into the journey of early Scots settlers to Nova Scotia, and their arrival in Pictou. The centerpiece is the continuing construction of a full-scale three-masted sailing ship, a replica of the Hector that carried the early pioneers from Loch Broom, Scotland in 1773. You can experience the rolling motion of the deck as the passengers disembark the Hector to begin their new lives. The Hector Heritage Quay provides a glimpse into 18th century life. Also on site is a carpentry shop and a restored blacksmith shop.
