National Parks / Provincial Parks

 Barachois Brook Park is the major park in Newfoundland
Located off the Trans Canada Highway the park is 20 kilometres from Stephenville. All 3500 hectares of the park are in the Western Newfoundland Forest ecoregion which is characterized by a balsam fir forest with an understory of ferns and moss. The Park has a variety of activities which make it one of the most popular parks in the province to visit. There are freshwater swimming beaches, bird watching, mountain streams, and invigorating hikes with panoramic views. A park interpreter provides a varied interpretive program including guided walks, environmental games and campfire sing alongs.

There are 13 other Provincial Parks in Newfoundland and Labrador where one can camp overnight. Thirteen of these parks are staffed while one, Chance Cove, is maintained by Parks and Natural Areas Division but not staffed. See Parks & Natural Areas Division Newfoundland and Labrador

This is where the sun first shines in North America, at Cape Spear National Historic Site.
History runs deep all through the peninsula, people have been living in St. John's since the 1520's.
 Central Region - a land of trees
Huge stands of spruce, birch, and pine are at the heart of Central Newfoundland, the reason the area was settled and the source of livelihood for many of its people today. The interior of the island was opened up to meet the worldwide demand for newsprint.
 Eastern Region
Bonavista and Burin Peninsulas, taking in John Cabot's historic landing place in 1497, and the gateway to France [ at Fortune, and many exciting places in between ].
 Labrador Region - a world of towering mountains, massive rock faces, huge lakes and rivers
It's one of the last great wilderness areas on the planet. Here, the air is clean, the water clear and pure, and the people equally unspoiled. A trip to Labrador is not a run of the mill vacation. It's a Great Adventure.
 Western Region - stretching from Channel-Port aux Basques to St Anthony
Northern Newfoundland has the longest iceberg season on the island. Most years you can see icebergs here well into August, long after they have melted elsewhere.

 Argentia
The world was introduced to the Town of Argentia in 1941 when Sir Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt met for the first time in Placentia Bay to issue a joint declaration on the purposes of the war against fascism. Following this important meeting, Argentia was built into an American naval base. Passengers can view the changes and impact the war had on this quiet community at the Museum of the Atlantic Allies.
Besides its historic significance, Argentia is also one of the major ports for people visiting and leaving the island. Ferries run from Argentia to North Sydney, Nova Scotia from May until October.
 Bishop Falls - Town of Bishop Falls
Founded in 1909, Bishop's Falls, Newfoundland (pop. 4,200) is a picturesque community nestled on the banks of the Exploits River. It's known for its railway heritage, some of the best salmon fishing in North America, their hockey legends, and of course their Trestle of "Titanic Proportions" [ Newfoundland's oldest and longest railway trestle ].
An ideal home base while you explore the scenic Exploits Valley and surrounding coastal communities. Icebergs, whale watching and scenic fishing communities are all within an hour drive of our town.
 Bonavista - Town of Bonavista
Venetian explorer John Cabot landed here in 1497. The scenery is striking and the history fascinating.

 Gander - Town of Gander
Throughout the 'Jet Age' of the 50s and 60s, virtually every transatlantic flight required a refueling stop at Gander. The airport terminal became a rest stop for the rich and famous, from the Hollywood who's who to kings and presidents, and 'star-gazing' was a popular local pastime.
 Grand Falls Windsor - Town of Grand Falls-Windsor
Grand Falls-Windsor - the heart of "Exploits - Wild and Free" - is a world-class tourist destination. The Grand Falls Fishway and Salmonid Interpretation Center, Newfoundland's fastest-growing tourism attraction, is located just four (4) kilometers from downtown Grand Falls-Windsor. While at the salmon ladder be sure to catch a glimpse of the legendary "Grand Falls."
Other natural beauties in the region include Thunder Brook, a popular place for residents to swim, picnic or take in the sights.  Western Sno-Riders Snowmobile Club Cornerbrook
Group of volunteers who wanted to foster the sport of snowmobiling by making trails safer and more comfortable to ride. Emphasis wanted to be placed on more family oriented snowmobiling, so as to get more people involved in the sport.
 
 Bell Island
Bell Island is the largest of several islands in Conception Bay, measuring about 9 km by 3.5 km. From the province's capital St. John's, the oldest city in North America, it's a 20-minute drive to the ferry terminal at Portugal Cove, then a 20-minute ferry ride to Bell Island.
Bell Island was the only place in North America to have seen enemy action in World War II. The pier where 80,000 tons of iron ore was stored for shipping was torpedoed by German U-boats in 1942.

 History of Newfoundland - Wikipedia
"Newfoundland" (in the original, Terra Nova) was named by the Portuguese João Vaz Corte-Real in 1472, making it the oldest European name in North America....
After the Vikings, the first permanent European settlers in Newfoundland were Irish fishermen, who named the island Talamh an Éisc, meaning "island of fish" in Irish Gaelic. This was to foreshadow the centuries of importance of Newfoundland's offshore fishing waters.
 L'Anse aux Meadows - Parcs Canada - The only authenticated Viking settlement in North America
Discovered by Norwegian explorer Dr. Helge Ingstad and his archaeologist wife, Anne Stine Ingstad in 1960. The site of a multi-year archaeological dig, the settlement dating to more than 500 years before Christopher Columbus, contains the earliest European structures in North America. Named a World Heritage site by UNESCO, it is believed to be the legendary Vinland settlement of explorer Leif Ericson.

 Mid Summer Viking Festival - Norstead, L'Anse aux Meadows, July
Located about two km from L'Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site, the only authenticated Viking site in North America, Norstead replicates a Viking port of trade as it may have looked during the Viking era (790 -1066 AD). The four-hectare site has a boat shed with its very own Viking ships, including the 54 foot replica Viking knarr which sailed from Greenland to L'Anse aux Meadows in 1998 with a crew of only nine men. There is also a chieftain's hall, church, and a workshop, with costumed interpreters who bring the site to life. All buildings, which consist of wood paneled walls and earthen floors, have been created to convey the look and feel of the Viking Era. See Norstead.com.
 Targa Newfoundland
It is an annual event and forms a 2200 km long, high quality automotive adventure. It is held over a seven-day period in September of each year on the paved roads of the eastern and central parts of the island of Newfoundland.
The event allows the owners of historic, classic and modern sporting motor vehicles to drive them the way they were designed to be driven. In the event each vehicle competes against itself on a handicap basis as well as against other vehicles. The competition is for Targa plates which every competitor can win. There is no prize money.
