KYRGYZSTAN > ASIA > INDEX
Kyrgyz Republic, former Kirghiz Soviet Socialist Republic
Divided in Bishkek, Chuy [ Bishkek ], Jalal-Abad, Naryn, Osh, Talas and Ysyk-Kol [ Karakol ].
Kyrgyzstan is situated in the very middle of the Eurasian continent, bordering China (east), Kazakhstan (north and west), Uzbekistan (southwest), and Tadjikistan (southwest and south).
What Kyrgyzstan lacks in gracious buildings and fancy cakes, it more than makes up for with nomadic traditions
such as laid-back hospitality, a healthy distrust of authority and a fondness for drinking fermented mare's milk. Many travellers find Kyrgyzstan the most appealing, accessible and welcoming of the
Central Asian republics, particularly as it contains the central Tian Shan and Pamir Alay ranges, Central Asia's finest mountains.

Kyrgyzstan's History - Wikipedia
Kyrgyzstan: Central Asia's Island of Democracy? John Anderson Born out of the collapse of the USSR, Kyrgyzstan has been notable for its struggle to develop a pluralist polity
and free market, an attempt that distinguishes it from some of its more authoritarian neighbors. This volume
introduces students and businessmen to this most attractive of republics, offering an overview of its history,
politics, economic development, and place in the international community. In particular, it focuses on the
problematic nature of political development, with democratic and pluralist impulses struggling to survive against the dominance of more traditional forms of governance.
