 Cuisines of Portuguese Encounters
Cherie Hamilton
In the 16th century, Portuguese navigators circumvented the globe, conquering new lands to build one of history's largest empires, and at the same time carrying and introducing crops, food products and a variety of culinary cultures to all corners of the earth. This fascinating collection of 225 authentic recipes is the first cookbook to encompass the entire Portuguese-speaking world and explains how Portugal and its former colonies influenced each other's culinary traditions. Included are dishes containing Asian, South American, African, and European spices, along with varied ingredients like piripiri pepper, coconut milk, cilantro, manioc root, bananas, dried fish, seafood and meats. The author also explores the impact of Sephardic Jews on the cuisines of Cape Verde, Angola, and Brazil and the influence of the Moors, who brought to the Iberian peninsula rich desserts, which the Portuguese in turn took around the world. The recipes range from appetisers like: Pastel com o Diabo Dentro (Pastry with the Devil Inside from Cape Verde); to main courses such as Frango a Africana (Grilled Chicken African Style from Mozambique) and Cuscuz de Camarao (Shrimp Couscous from Brazil), to desserts like Pudim de Coc;co (Coconut Pudding from Timor). Menus for religious holidays and festive occasions, a glossary, a brief history of the cuisines and a bilingual index will assist the home chef in creating meals that celebrate the rich, diverse, and delicious culinary legacy of this old empire.

In May 2002, after 450 years of continuous foreign occupation, East Timor became an independent state.

Brief history of Timor-Leste [ by UNPD ]
Anthropological investigations indicate that the first people to arrive in Timor, approximately 40,000 to 20,000 years BC, were of the Vedo-Australoide type, similar to the Vedas of Ceylon. A second wave, which arrived around 3000 years BC, consisted of Melanesians, similar to those living today in Papua New-Guinea and some Pacific Islands. Probably due ............

East Timor: A Rough Passage to Independence - James Dunn
With expert analysis and clarity of writing, James Dunn highlights the disturbing gap between the noble rhetoric and the heartless reality of international commitment and resolve East Timor: A Rough Passage to Independence is a story of political intrigue and the hidden world of international diplomatic deals. It is also the story of countless individuals, governments, and international bodies who, ultimately, pulled together to change the luck of this tiny island. From the days of colonial Portuguese rule, through the tumultuous years of the Indonesian invasion, to the present day this book is a disturbing portrayal of the complete failure of the international community to deal with the East Timor situation.

Beautiful land of rugged mountains, perfect beaches and friendly, outgoing people. Surrounded by the world's richest marine ecosystems, its waters offer countless unexplored reefs teeming with sea life. Archeological finds date the earliest inhabitants of the island to migrations from Asia some 30,000 years ago, and cave paintings point to direct links with the aboriginal people of northern Australia. The Portuguese, colonial masters of East Timor for four hundred years, left a legacy of graceful architecture, Catholicism - and good food. You won't find any resorts in East Timor, or golf courses. What you will find instead, as one journalist recently wrote, is the last unspoiled country in Asia [ text from the Unoffical Guide to East Timor ]
