Uganda handbook  - Footprint  -  Michael Hodd, Angela Roche
Uganda, straddling the equator and perched on the northern shore of Lake Victoria, is marketing itself as an eco-destination. Its gorillas represent perhaps the most powerful eco-image of them all, but there is so much more to Uganda. Travellers can go gorilla or chimp tracking; climb Mount Elgon or the Rwenzoris; look deeper into Africa's past with its Kabaka traditions; visit the Seses - tropical islands in a freshwater lake; speed down the River Nile in a helter of white water; or just sit and enjoy the stunning landscapes. Or the traveller can learn more about the country by taking a village walk or even do some voluntary work to put something back into the country. This guide to Uganda offers comprehensive information enabling the traveller to get off the standard trail and experience so much more of the country. The guide provides detailed information on national parks and game reserves along with up-to-date listings on the practicalities of travel.

History of Uganda

Independence: 9 October 1962 (from UK)

When Arab traders moved inland from their enclaves along the Indian Ocean coast of East Africa and reached the interior of Uganda in the 1830s, they found several African kingdoms with well-developed political institutions dating back several centuries. These traders were followed in the 1860s by British explorers searching for the source of the Nile River. Protestant missionaries entered the country in 1877, followed by Catholic missionaries in 1879.

 Uganda's History  -  Wikipedia
Uganda before 1900, Colonial Uganda, Early Independent Uganda, Uganda under Amin, Uganda since 1979.
Uganda  -  Ian Leggett, Geoff Sayer (Illustrator)
Once known as "The Pearl of Africa", Uganda has, over the last 50 years, suffered the notoriety of rule by dictator Idi Amin, of economic collapse and of systematic human rights abuses. Yet today, Uganda is widely viewed as an inspirational economic success story, and as a symbol of a more vibrant, successful Africa. This country profile provides a concise account of Uganda's historical and political background and traces the growth of modern Uganda, where pioneering and imaginative responses to poverty and political pluralism are contrasted with the devastating effects of continuing internal conflicts. Throughout the book, Ugandan people speak for themselves on such issues as dealing with conflict; the effects of the universal primary education program; and innovative projects to combat HIV and AIDS.

 Swahili
Swahili is the mother tongue of the Swahili people who inhabit a 1500 km stretch of the East African coast from southern Somalia to northern Mozambique. There are approximately five million first-language speakers and fifty million second-language speakers. Swahili has become a lingua franca for East Africa and surrounding areas.
The Swahili  -  Mark Horton, John Middleton
The Swahili are one of the best known of the peoples of Africa. Living along the East African coast, they acted as commercial middlemen, exchanging the commodities of continental Africa, such as gold, copper, slaves, ivory, skins and timber with the luxury items of the classical, oriental and Islamic worlds. They were central participants in a global economy, long before the era of European expansion. This book is one of the first to draw on recent archaeological findings and a re-assessment of the historical and anthropological evidence to provide an account of this remarkable African civilization covering some two thousand years. This book is essential reading not only for Africanists, but also for those dealing with the history of Islam, Mediterranean history, and Indian Ocean studies, and for those who wish to understand how trading societies organize their landscape, society, governance and belief systems.
