Bandits on the Border: The Last Frontier in the Search for Somali Unity Nene Mburu
Bandits on the Border revisits the pan-Somalian nationalism of the 1960s when Kenyan Somalis attempted to
secede and join the Somalia State that had been created after the merger of former British Somaliland and the
Italian Trusteeship. This is the first insider's analysis of the so-called Shifta secessionist war and its
degeneration into the apolitical banditry. It examines how it was affected by the Cold War, compares it with
other African secessionist wars and explores the connections with America's war on international terrorism.

History of Somalia
Independence: 1 July 1960 (from a merger of British Somaliland, which became independent from the UK on
26 June 1960, and Italian Somaliland, which became independent from the Italian-administered UN trusteeship on 1 July 1960, to form the Somali Republic)
The Republic of Somaliland known as the Somaliland Protectorate under the British rule from 1884 until June,
26th 1960 when Somaliland got its independence from Britain. On July 1st 1960 it joined the former Italian
Somalia to form the Somali Republic. The union did not work according to the aspirations of the people, and
the strain led to a civil war from 1980s onwards and eventually to the collapse of the Somali Republic. After
the collapse of the Somali Republic, the people of Somaliland held a congress in which it was decided to withdraw from the Union with Somalia and to reinstate Somaliland's sovereignty.
