The country is rugged and has a great deal of forest cover and few natural resources.
The islands lie on an alignment of once-active volcanoes, with rugged landscapes, dense forests and virgin, palm-fringed beaches.
These islands provide unspoiled beauty and isolation from the world now rarely found anywhere else. The history of the islands is dominated by the slave trade and slave-worked plantations. The town of São Tomé is picturesque, with colonial Portuguese architecture and attractive parks. There are several restaurants in the capital. Reservations are nearly always required, not for lack of space but to allow the proprietor to obtain sufficient food in advance. Grilled fish and chicken are popular. Most dishes are highly spiced.

 Cuisines of Portuguese encounters
Cherie Hamilton
In the 16th century, Portuguese navigators circumvented the globe, conquering new lands to build one of history's largest empires, and at the same time carrying and introducing crops, food products and a variety of culinary cultures to all corners of the earth. This fascinating collection of 225 authentic recipes is the first cookbook to encompass the entire Portuguese-speaking world and explains how Portugal and its former colonies influenced each other's culinary traditions. Included are dishes containing Asian, South American, African, and European spices, along with varied ingredients like piripiri pepper, coconut milk, cilantro, manioc root, bananas, dried fish, seafood and meats.

History of Sao Tomé

Independence: 12 July 1975 (from Portugal)

Discovered on St Thomas' day in 1470 by Portuguese navigators

From the late 1400s Portugal began settling convicts on Sao Tome and establishing sugar plantations with the help of slaves from the mainland. The island was also important in the transshipment of slaves.

The colony's aspirations for independence were recognised after the 1974 coup in Portugal and at first the Movement for the Liberation of Sao Tome and Principe was the country's sole political party. However, the 1990 constitution created a multiparty democracy. The island of Principe assumed autonomy in 1995.

A History of Sao Tome Island, 1470-1655: The Key to Guinea
John Rove (Foreword), Robert Garfield
This text is the history of the Portuguese island of Sao Tome from its discovery in 1470 to 1655 - its internal social and economic development and changing relations with the African mainland and the world trade system. Settled by Portuguese criminals, prostitutes, children of Jews, and African slaves, their mulatto descendents became a wealthy sugar-growing planter class, Europe's leading sugar suppliers in the 16th century. This study illustrates how the too-perfect adaptation of a small-scale society to its original economic relationships, issues of race, and the lack of alternatives caused by an entrenched ruling class which had lost its economic justification for rule, combine to create a destructive rigidity that can lead to social collapse and make effective amelioration impossible.
Paperback 356 pages (December 1992); Publisher: Edwin Mellen Press; Language: English; ISBN: 0773494561.

Music, Art & Culture, Events & Entertainment

The santomense culture is very rich. Above all in the expressions of musical nature, in that the African musical rhythms are mixed with the melodious harmony of the European music, mainly the Portuguese, and that produces a beautiful effect. The socopé, is the santomense dance more beautiful and more popular . One of the larger illustrations of the santomense actual music is Juca. See for more the home page of Carlos Pereira.

Ossobo: Essays on the Literature of Sao Tome and Principe  - Donald Burness
The first English language work devoted solely and specifically to the literature of Sao Tome and Principe. Contains three essays discussing themes unique to this country - themes that no critic writing in any language has dealt with to any serious degree. Burness examines the poetry and stories on the mythic bird of Sao Tome and Principe, the Ossobo; literature that treats the massacre of 1953, often referred to as the Massacre of Batapa; and the poetry and drama of Fernando de Macedo. Concludes with an appendix of 23 poems from Sao Tome and Principe.
Paperback 240 pages (January 19, 2006); Publisher: Africa World Press; Language: English; ISBN: 1592213723
