The Healing Land: The Bushmen and the Kalahari Desert - Rupert Isaacson
Brought up on family stories about the Bushmen of the Kalahari, Rupert Isaacson journeys to this vast, dry
grassland--which stretches across South Africa, Botswana and Namibia--to find out the truth behind these
childhood myths. Deep in the arid heartland Isaacson discovers the last groups of Bushmen still living in the
traditional way, caught between their ancient culture and the growing need to protect and reclaim their
dwindling hunting grounds. Little by little he is drawn into the fascinating web of ritual and prophecy that make
up the Bushman reality, until at last he is sent in search of Besa, a powerful healer and shape-shifter. What follows is an adventure of an intensity he could never have predicted.
Part travel writing, part history of the Bushmen, part personal quest, The Healing Land records what Isaacson
finds in these silent, empty spaces, the trance dances he attends, the wildlife he hunts, the wild plants he helps gather, the characters, corruption, kindness and confusion of a people who have wrenched
themselves from the Stone Age into the new millennium. Paperback: 304 pages; Publisher: Grove Press; Reprint edition (February 24, 2004); Language: English; ISBN-10: 0802140513; ISBN-13: 978-0802140517

PBS - Living Edens - Namib, Africa's Burning Shore
The Namib is a two thousand kilometer strip of land on the southwestern coast of Africa where the cold
Atlantic sea and searing Namibian desert join. The arid land is obscured and enriched by a mist created by the
cold Benguela current. Jackals and hyenas struggle to survive on this sandy desert stage. With few watering holes, animals must roam the beach and seek nourishment from the bountiful marine life.
Skeleton Coast
Namibia is Africa's harsh paradise indeed and, moreover, it is a hunter's paradise. Its northern coastline is
called the Skeleton Coast, because many an early sailor whose ship fell prey to the unpredictable waters and who had made it to the shore, died there of thirst.

Africa, with the exception of Walvis Bay, which was under British control.
