The coastline is characterized by powerful surf, rocky cliffs and lagoons. It makes access from the Atlantic
Ocean difficult, except at the modern ports. The flat coastal plain consists of forest and savannah. The
interior hills and mountain ranges, with altitudes of 180-360m, form part of an extended peneplain, covered by
evergreen (in the south) or semi-deciduous (in the north) rain forests. The northern highlands contain
Liberia's greatest elevations, which include the Nimba mountains, reaching 1,752m above sea-level, and the
Wologisi range, reaching 1,381m. The descent from the higher to the lower belts of the highlands is characterized by rapids and waterfalls.

History of Liberia
Independence: 26 July 1847
Liberia, Africa's oldest republic came into existence as the result of treaties signed in 1821 between the
aborigines and the American Colonization Society (ACS). Under these treaties, freed black slaves from the
United States were to be resettled on this part of the African Continent along with 16 aboriginal tribes.
Following the signing of the treaties, the first settlers landed on the historic Providence Island in January 1822.
The settlers moved to the mainland where they settled along with subsequent groups of settlers of African descent including some people from the West Indies and the Congo.
