The city is a port on the Gabon River, near the Gulf of Guinea, and a trade center for a timber region.
The area around the city was inhabited by the Mpongwé tribe long before the French acquired the land in 1839.

 Lambarene - third-largest city - built on an island in the middle of the Ogooué River
Located on East of Gabon, in the Moyen Ogoue region, at 246 kilometres from Libreville, Lambaréné and its lakes is one of the destination of Gabon. Lambaréné si worldly famous thanks to the Doctor Schweitzer Hospital. The Hospital was created in 1924, and unoccupied buildings since 1965, death doctor's date, can be freely visited with a guide. Its house has been turned into a Museum since its death, where every things are still in place.

Lastoursville is located on the southern banks of the Ogooué River, with rolling hills all around. Once a boomtown during construction of the Transgabonais, Lozo (as the locals call it) is now pretty sleepy, offering good restaurants and inexpensive accommodation. The main attractions are all outside of town, including hikes to the Boundji Waterfalls or the caves about an hour's walk from the centre. Lastoursville is about 400km (250mi) east of Libreville, on the Transgabonais.

The northern point of the island, Cap Lopez, is flooded with expatriates, top-end hotels and the only decent beach. Port-Gentil has more restaurants, nightclubs and stores per capita than any other African city and has expanded to include a casino and a decent hospital. The African quarters are cheaper than the top-end of town and offers a host of inexpensive restaurants, bars and clubs that are as lively and interesting as those in Libreville and even safer to visit [ info from the embassy - 2005 ]
Port-Gentil is about 200km (125mi) south-west of Libreville. The only way to get there is by air or water. There are flights from Libreville, a ferry between Port-Gentil and the capital, or a riverboat, which you can catch in Lambaréné or Ndjolé.

 Corisco Islands Bay
Settled in the Atlantic Ocean, close to the North Gabonese coast, after 45 minutes from Libreville by boat, the tree Corisco islands are named : Banie, Cocotier and Konga. The viewing is like a dream so that sea waters are blue and limpids, white sand beaches are marvellous, blue sky is intense.
The Corisco Bay is excellent place for scuba diving to observe sea wildlife [ from July to October, these months are recommended to observe Whales who have chosen these warm sea water of Corisco Islands Bay for their reproduction period. A spectacle to be absolutely seen in Gabon ]
 Lake Region
The Lake region is visited with motorised pirogues from North to South from Lambarene city. The Zilé Lake, close to Lambarene, is long of 7 kilometres and large of 2 kilometres, hardly populated. In the centre, the "Fetish Island" is a sacred wood where we are already in the ambience of green and dense vegetation. By the north The Deguiele Lake, the Lake Gome and the Azingo Lake, which are located close to the Wogua -Wongue reserve frontiers offering various and intense spectacles. By the South, most of lakes are vast, populated by hippopotamus, monkeys, varanus, eagles, pelicans and other fishing birds spices. The Evaro Lake is a real liana curtain's theatre. The Ezanga Lake, the Onangue Lake, The Ogoueme Lakes are also worth to be visited for their view.
