History of Cameroon
Independence: 1 January 1960 (from UN trusteeship under French administration)
Swedish Ventures in Cameroon, 1883-1923: Trade and Travel, People and Politics By Shirley Ardener (Editor)
The 1880's were a critical time in Cameroon. A German warship arrived in the Douala estuary and proclaimed
Cameroon a protectorate. At that time, two Swedes, Knutson and Waldau, were living on the upper slopes of
the Cameroon Mountain. Very little is known about their activities. One of them, Knutson, wrote a long memoir
of his time in Cameroon (1883-1895) which is published here for the first time. It gives fascinating insights into
everyday life in Cameroon and into the multifaceted relationships among the various Europeans, and between them and the Africans, at the end of the 19th century. Together with appended contemporary
correspondence, legal opinions, and early (translated) texts, this memoir must be considered as a unique and invaluable primary source for the pre-colonial history of Cameroon.
Paperback 352 pages (August 31, 2000); Publisher: Berghahn Books
Middlemen of the Cameroons Rivers: Duala and Their Hinterland, 1600-1960
By Ralph A. Austen, Ralph Derrick, Jonathan Derrick The Duala people entered the international scene as merchant-brokers for precolonial trade in ivory, slaves
and palm products. Under colonial rule they used the advantages gained from earlier riverain trade to develop
cocoa plantations and provide their children with exceptional levels of European education. At the same time
they came into early conflict with both German and French regimes and played a leading - if ultimately
unsuccessful - role in anti-colonial politics. In tracing these changing economic and political roles, this book
also examines the growing consciousness of the Duala as an ethnic group and uses their history to shed
new light on the history of 'middleman' communities in surrounding regions of West and Central Africa. The
authors draw upon a wide range of written and oral sources, including indigenous accounts of the past
conflicting with their own findings but illuminate local conceptions of social hierarchy and their relationship to spiritual beliefs.
Paperback 266 pages (January 21, 1999); Publisher: Cambridge University Press

Culture and Customs of Cameroon - by John Mukum Mbaku
A definitive accessible introduction to modern Cameroon Cameroon has been called "Africa in miniature." It is
characterized by exceptional social and ethnic diversity, with more than 250 ethnicities now forming five
major regional-culture groupings. This volume is the first to encapsulate Cameroon's rich indigenous and
modern customs and traditions in depth. The narrative emphasizes those aspects that define its modern
nation, its peoples, the unique societies, their institutions, and various lifestyles. The origins of Cameroon's
diverse culture are traced back to the various ethnic groups and languages as well as the influence of
European colonialism, Christianity, Islam, and other external factors, including globalization. In each topical
chapter, examples from ethnic groups are presented to give some sense of the variety of experience.
Cameroon has had a turbulent and eventful modern history with German, English, and French incursions, and
students and general readers will be able to understand the current struggle for democracy. The history
colours the substantial coverage of the many topics examined, from education, to marriage and women's
roles, sports, and holidays, daily life, the arts, and much more.. Part of the Culture and Customs of Africa series. The first book of this kind to cover Cameroon
